Dreamcast accessories Region free?

Post by jalvarez82 »

What's up peeps! Quick question. Are all Deamcast accessories region free?

For example, I wanna pick up a Japanese keyboard and mouse set for the collection, maybe even a lightgun. Will I be able to use these items on my U.S. console?

Thanks. 8-)

I know the lightgun will work (though, like any lightgun, only on CRT TVs), I think the mouse and keyboard will, but I'm not sure if the Japanese keyboard has English characters.

The official lightgun wont work on US Dreamcasts as far as I am aware (Sega blocked it after the Columbine . All other items should be fine.

All Dreamcast hardware is region free. The only problem is, like dreamcastgaga already said, the US version of some lightgun shooters came with a software lock. Start the game without the gun, pass the "lightguns are not compatible" screen and plug it in. This should work, imo. I've tested it a long time ago, but I can't remember it. I can test it tomorrow if needed.

According to the pics at DreamcastGaga's store, there are both Eng and Jap lettering on it. So that's cool.

...and that probably should've answered my question in the first place lmao

Thanks guys! 8-)

No, it's a software lockout on US HotD2. Plugging it in after that screen passes will not make it work, which is very irratating. But on the plus side, the Japanese version of HotD2 is still in English and dirt cheap to import these days.

The official Lightgun, as I vaguely recall, does work with everyone of the rest of the lightgun games. It has been nearly ten years now since we deeply researched the lghtguns over on the Dreamcast Help forum. Sadly no record of that discussion still exists except maybe in part on one of hundreds of text documents I've saved over the many years, not that keen on plowing through those anytime soon. Fackue may still have a complete back-up of the forum, but he went incognito yeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrssssssss ago.

That's was my understanding from doing the research myself years back as well. It's absolutely not a matter of hardware lockout. It's the software. Plain and simple.

Confidential Mission is also another US title that will lock the official gun.

If it's a software thing, somebody could probably make a CB code to bypass the lockout.
