So I recently downloaded a copy of the Virtual On customize disc and was doing some research on how to use it when I came across these really old websites on playing VOOT over LAN and the Internet.
http://voot.sourceforge.net/
http://www.geocities.co.jp/Playtown-Denei/1016/
From what I can tell the boot program will allow you to play VOOT over the internet by emulating the VS Cable. I have never heard of this and found very little info on it. I was able to download the files that are provided on the website but since I don't own a real copy of Virtual On yet I was unable to try it out.
My question is has anybody here heard of this and if so, have you seen it working or gotten it to work?

Re: VOOT Netplay?!
I find this really interesting! Apparently it is to play VS mode using a broadband adapter on LAN or over the internet using a pc and npclient. I guess that LAN games work better than online games though. You have to configure npclient for your dc's ip and the connecting dc/ip.
So you would need 2 broadband adapters to play locally...
Funny the guy writing this info 10 years ago says it works with "A Dreamcast Broadband Adapter or a LAN Adapter for LAN / Internet play." or "A Dreamcast Modem for direct-dial play. "
If it works with the LAN adapter (doubtfully) then that's amazing!!
Direct-dial play? A phone call? Hmm so 2 Netopia's would work??

Re: VOOT Netplay?!
I would love to try this out. I have a BBA now, but don't own this. I could get a backup if anyone wants to try this....let me know!

Re: VOOT Netplay?!
Here is some info in bad English
:

The principle of the Internet play
Serial interfaces are built into the Dreamcast, you will be able to play against the cable by using this in Oratan.
Therefore, it is the reason that it can be emulated serial interface to the cable battle over the network.
What you need to play
• Dreamcast of MIL CD support
You can not start the program and not of the MIL CD support.
• DC version of "Cyber ??Troopers Virtual-On Oratorio Tangram"
It is of course necessary.
• It is of course also this Internet connection environment.
Again, I think more high-speed as much as possible is good.
• It is unlikely to cope with the built-in modem to broadband adapter future but, BBA is required at this time.
• viable and computer npclient
Since making a connection through the npclient, it is necessary.
UNIX-based, Win95 or more, OS seems capable of operating in a WinNT system at the moment.
• It is required to connect to a computer or LAN card Dreamcast handsome on your computer or router,.
• Because it can not be set manually the IP address of the Dreamcast version of the DHCP server now, DHCP server is required.
It has a built-in most cases when using the router.
Please install on your computer if you want to the LAN card of handsome.
DHCP server which is free software for Windows also exist.
• Or CD-R drive Dcload-ip of CD
It is necessary to start the program of Dreamcast side.
If you do not have a CD-R drive, ask them make a CD of dcload-ip to ask to those who have.
When you make a CD of dcload-ip, please be careful to not forget to set the IP address.

Re: VOOT Netplay?!
Ok, so I have done a lot of playing around with the client since I posted this and here are my results so far:
I first booted the np-voot-debug program using DC Load IP and then swap in the VOOT disc when it asks.
Next I started the npclient in a command prompt using command "npclient.exe -l5008" which looks like this:

I was able to find out that the np-voot-debug program uses your routers DHCP to assign it an ip address on the network. So, I opened a second command prompt and run the npclient again except using command "npclient.exe -c 192.168.1.4 -s 192.168.1.34:5008"
192.168.1.4 = Dreamcast
192.168.1.34= PC running npclient as server
Which looks like this:

It appears to connect ok as the server status changes to this:

Now on the Dreamcast side I start VOOT with the Versus Cable option and attempt to start a game as "DNA" and the npclient status seems to recognize when I start the game as pictured below:

So, it looks like the software might actually work!!
The only thing is that I do not have a second BBA to test it completely.
My guess is the software probably works. I just don't know how well. Especially if you try to connect to another client via the internet.
If the BBA's weren't so damn expensive I may try to pick up a second one.

OMG! It's doing things! Great detective work! I have a BBA and a LAN adapter if you want to try it out over the net.

Re: VOOT Netplay?!
Well could this work with the netopia router since the dreamcast uses an IP on your routers subnet? I would be interested in trying this out. Do you need a legit copy of the game or were u able to use a downloaded copy?
