So I guess I should at least ask if anyone else has thought of this.
I've had a sundriver in my Wii for a while now. This is an internal hack where I removed the disc drive and replaced it with a 500gb hard drive to load iso's, and it connects very conveniently to my computer via usb.
It works by use of an emulated dvd drive.
Why hasn't this been done for the dreamcast?

It is currently being developed by the creator of the PC Dreamcast emulator Makaron.
Basically it uses flash cards but still does the same thing.

I guess it is similar also to WODE if you are familiar to that.

Now that is very interesting. This would be a better method then the SD adapter seeing how it should be able to obtain faster data transfer speeds, not saying that the SD adapter is useless but it has a limitation due to transfer speeds, and this would be the way to fix a DC once the GD rom drive dies (its only a matter of time before they do), its a better option then locating a parts dealer and having to buy replacement parts that are going to eventually fail again (basically just throwing money at).Anthony817 wrote:It is currently being developed by the creator of the PC Dreamcast emulator Makaron.

I agree that this would be a better alternative for GDIs. However, the SD adapter has proven useful for homebrew games/applications. Perhaps both will be fully developed in the future.
In the meantime, someone in Japan figured how to bypass the GD-Rom to run the SD adapter. Thus, I can revive my dreamcast with a broken gd-rom to play homebrew games.

My one quesetion here is pretty simple: Why would anyone want to hack their own Dreamcast? Its too precious as,a jewel.

Well if it was done right you would not need to hack the console.MrSega wrote:My one quesetion here is pretty simple: Why would anyone want to hack their own Dreamcast? Its too precious as,a jewel.

Re: The future of dreamcast hacks?
The developer does the hacking yes (as in hacking code and developing the hardware), but you (the user) do not. there isn't anything you would need to hack or mod on your system if he was to make these and sell them, it should just be plug n play to you. And there is no reason he cant just hook the GD rom drive back into the system and have it back to originalelmagicochrisg wrote:So basically what you are saying is you don't need to hack the console...madmax2069 wrote:Well if it was done right you would not need to hack the console.MrSega wrote:My one quesetion here is pretty simple: Why would anyone want to hack their own Dreamcast? The only thing he did to the system itself was install a cable to lead to the development board. the rest of the system is unchanged and can easily be reverted back to normal by installing the GD rom unit.
Re: The future of dreamcast hacks?
@madmax. Well if someone were to mod the Dreamcast to play all regions GD ROMs or read VCDs and S-VCDs, that would be cooler & would show more love to your machine.
