Dreamcast VGA cable help.....please?

Post by karl_87 »

Hi everyone

I'm on a mission to try and get my dreamcast output to look good. I've read all about the VGA boxes and cables, and there-for bought a vga cable from ebay.

The cable seeeeems to work but I've tried it in 3 different TV's, 2 LG's and 1 Samsung, the LG's are recent LCD's and the Samsung was probably bought 5 years ago or so. All three TV's say "mode not supported" or something along those lines. I've read that many modern TV's don't support the dreamcast's output over VGA.

So I next bought a VGA to HDMI converter from amazon, all 3 TV's seem to detect the HDMI cable is there and plugged in to something but then decide there's not any signal.

Getting a bit wound up with it all to be honest, I was using a Scart/RGB cable plugged in to the TV's RGB socket, but the quality isn't very good. So I'm not sure if it's scart or RGB or what. Not sure how to tell.

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys!

So true, ae.tc, the Dreamcast VGA is a 4:3 640x480p60 signal. Not everything likes it, but it is not a common issue as most displays support the Dreamcast signal. Radkin has a 22" Haier that liked the VGA adapter but did not like the VGA box (3rd party box by retro-bit). We had to use a VGA switcher that dealt with variations of VGA/RGBS/RGBHV signals to correctly use the VGA box (it would offset the signal/image to the left and leave out part of the image).
