Dream Explorer doesn't recognize memory card?

Hi. I'm trying to use Dream Explorer to put a Sonic Adventure 2 save on my memory card:

It's that orange one. When I am saving a save file to my memory card, it says the VMU has not been recognized? It works fine other than Dream Explorer.

Do I NEED to purchase a VMU in order to use it correctly?

Don't spend more time on 3rd party stuff. You can buy an original VMU for a few bucks. This should work flawless.

Or format your VMU and try it again. But please copy your savegames on another vmu first.
