Dreamcast Wireless Broadband!!!

Post by segata sanshiro »

As life advances and we're not so young anymore, we cant have the whole house full of cables, children, dust and madness. So i haven't even tried to connect my BBA for the last 6 years, mainly because it is very far from the router. But, a couple of weeks ago i decided to make this experiment!

And it works like a charm!!!

Image

What you see below is a cheap (20$ brand new with free shipping) device that makes the BBA virtually wireless. I didnt setup anything, all IP addresses are set to automatic on the DC and it works flawlessly for web browsing.

Image

I hope to have free time soon to configure it properly for Q3 and PSO.
Decades ago i managed to connect and get my ass fragged in Quake III, but could never properly connect to PSO (i've never actually played it online, but close to 50 hours offline).

I hope this new 2014 will bring me new fortine and the chance to finally feel what PSO is all about.

I'll try not to sound like a commercial, but i was really impressed with the quality of the device, the plastic feels good (i'll put it around Logitec or Samsung level of quality), the packaging is great and (drum roll) even the manual is in full color! The setup requires a computer, but its very simple and takes no more than 5 minutes. I got it directly from here, there are a million different models, i just picked this one for the design, no especial reason.

Have a merry Dreamcast Christmas guys!

It's probably something more along the lines of what Linksys called their "Wireless Gaming Adapters". Basically, they're just a device that has a wifi antenna and an ethernet jack so that you can hook up devices that only have ethernet to a wireless network.

Note: the same sort of thing can be done with a lot of Linksys (and other brand) routers by installing DD-WRT (or other custom firmwares) on them. So, if you have a pile of old routers for whatever reason, that might be another route you could take.

I "had" a Wireless G Adapter that did not work (used - eBay). I had to return it but prior to that, I read the manual and found that I had to use my PC to configure it, but not in a way of just "setting it up", it was a task.

I do not know if this new one is the same as that last one.

That was my fear as well, but i had to try.... and yes it needed a PC (actually any device that can open the router interface in a web browser) but actually only for setting it up and thats it.

I'll post more after i connect to Q3, PSO. What else is there right now that can be played with the BBA? Doom? Is Planet Ring BBA patched?

PSO and Quake are the only commercial games that support the BBA, which is why people who want to play all of the Dreamcast's online games use the modem.

I know, but with my isp its (i believe) almost impossible to setup the modem :(
Anyway, what else is there actively being played (with modem)? Some Doom coop would be sweet.

On every Wednesday, DC-Talk has a game night that has one of the following:
1. 4x4 Evo
2. Planet Ring
3. Max Pool (love this one)
4. Starlancer (which was last Wednesday).
5. I believe either PSO or Q3 is played on that night as well, I'm not sure.

I do not know if Sega Swirl will ever be attempted being it's more of an email type thing.

Must be Q3, because the only arranged game night for PSO that I'm aware of is Saturdays.

That's why many people have their DC dial into a PC modem or special modem/router hardware to let the DC share a broadband connection while still using a modem locally to make modem games happy.
