I would like to know more about the new console idea as well. Here is a question.
1) What can you tell us about the console idea that you are working on?
@Dcultra, we don't really know anything about the idea yet - IE: is it a console similar in specs and power to the DC? Or is it a console that is compatible with the DC software and hardware? What is the target audience?
It takes some serious money to develop a console - not just for the hardware development angle, but also to entice developers, market the dang thing, generate demand, and then there is the resistance from bricks and mortar stores to carrying something from an unproven and untested brand (how many neogeo pockets did you ever see for sale in Western countries? And that was from a semi-established brand). That being said, Chinese electronics are really affordable - the Dingo A320 emulation handheld has a faster processor (366mhz) and more ram (32mb) than a dreamcast. We don't know what Frank's angle is with the project though - presumably he's not catering to the average gamer since a console with dreamcast like specs would probably be seen as horribly back level.

well we know what dobbs told us, that it will have similar specs in terms of power to the DC but other than that there's no more info so far, I just don't see it being something viable... I can't understand why they would risk doing something like that, who's going to buy it? not the COD/FIFA generation that's for sure!

Re: Tahi - The Arocean War (9-9-09)
Well, Dobb's said the console would "mirror the capability of the DC." That's a pretty unspecific statement and could be interpreted a couple different ways. Wishful thinking, but it could even mean that it is a modern spec console that is designed to be as cutting edge and provide as unique an experience as the DC was back in 1999-2001
There are niche markets for non-mainstream consoles. The Dingo is a good example, as is the Gamepark and Open Pandora, likewise the people behind the new SNK portable neo geo handheld seem to think there is a possibility to make money. These cater more to the hobbyist developer and emulator enthusiast crowd, effectively leveraging existing popular game libraries (SNES, MD, neogeo, etc) to increase the popularity of their products. Even if these systems aren't sold in stores, and with the limited audience, as long as the price point is low enough and the capabilities interesting enough, there's a way to slice it to make the financials work in your favor.

I think your kinda clutching at straws with your first statement though mate, with all the best will in the world, I highly doubt it could be interpreted to mean that they want to make a cutting edge console, the costs for a small private developer team would be astronomical. its logical to assume that they plan to manufacture something similar in SPEC to the DC that will perhaps be easily accessible and allow for downloadable games as well as disc... though I'M probably clutching at straws myself now lol.dark wrote:Well, Dobb's said the console would "mirror the capability of the DC." anyway I took it to mean that they will simply make a similar spec machine, which is why I was like "why do it?" and I ask that question simply based on the state of the industry at the moment
but hey, who am I lol

Re: Tahi - The Arocean War (9-9-09)
My issue is, not what the FIFA/COD generation (weird games to lump together Ultra, I kind of like FIFA tbh
) thinks about the idea but even us hardest of hardcore Dreamcast fans. Why would I want to buy a system with similar specs and none of the games or peripherals that the DC had? I'm sure they have a reason for what they're planning but right now it sounds beyond crazy which has me incredibly excited for more news.

I purely lumped them together as examples of rehashed franchises that have a game EVERY year simply to cash in on the popularity, basically fooling the masses into buying EVERY year.
Yeah I read about that Dark, that actually sounds awesome, make your own Android games. but that is totally different, the android platform is current, a machine similar to the Dreamcast just sounds strange, I guess we should just wait for more details before judging I just don't see how it can be financially viable for them

I did communicate to Reticon Entertainment the question of a new console that many are wondering about. Please note that I do not know how much they can openly say.

Am I right that they're working on a new console that is fully compatible with Dreamcast?

Re: Tahi - The Arocean War (9-9-09)
It sounds like Tahi might be around 5-10% completed (or maybe even less depending on how you look at it). No where near completion. Why would the small team divert their focus on to what seems to be yet another 'straw man'
