I ,or rather my dreamcast and I, had a lucky escape this morning. My cat knocked over a vase full of water over my consoles/hifi  Most of it went over my Xbox 360 Slim, Hifi components, speakers, leads and my Ps2 - they are all waterlogged. Only my DC escaped the deluge. Phew !

I have everything on an 'open' rack so nothing was protected. I can't believe how stupid I've been leaving the vase out, the flowers were for my girlfriend so I guess she wanted them on show. A potentially expensive mistake but not all is lost, I've got a friend who has taken everything home to try and dry them out properly. He says it will take a week or more before I should know the full extent of the damage.

I took the opportunity to go furniture hunting and I found a 1970's HiFi cabinet. It cost me £30 from a junk shop. It's pretty disgusting looking atm - a horrible dark brown with disgusting brass knobs on the doors/draws. But it's fairly well made so I think I'll sand it down and stain it lighter, add some new knobs etc It could be the answer to my predicament.

When/if I get my stuff back I'll post some pics.

ouch thats horrible when that happens! The worst one I ever had was when I had my first Dreamcast when living with my parents. I had this lightning in a ball type thing in my room near my tv on a shelf and after a few months whenever I turned on my DC after 2-3 mins it would just reset of its own accord. this is the kinda thing I had:

I was a tad pissed to say the least

yes I really am lol, literally a few weeks-month after I got it and had it sat, pretty much vertically above my DC on a shelf it stopped working, electromagnetic, it must have been putting out some kind of short range field that effected all electronics in that area... fcuk knows lol

Thanks for the in-depth and very scientific explanation ;)

OMG, I just went round to see my watery consoles. I nearly burst into tears lol My friends uncle has been drying all the parts with a hairdryer and has now moved them, bit by bit, to the airing cupboard. It didn't look good to me :( He reckons that,as long as they weren't switched on at the time, they should be OK. Should I have trusted this man :? Will all the pieces go back in the right place ? Whatever, it's done now.

I get to switch it all on tomorrow......

You do know that a lot of people wash their motherboards in a dish washer or hand wash them (mainly to vintage hardware) to get crud off them (crud such as dried electrolyte from a busted cap, or a busted battery, or mouse droppings and urine and other such great stuff).

The only thing you have to make sure of is that there is NO standing water under any chip or fixture by blowing compressed air on the board around each chip and fixture.

But the mans correct, if the unit is not powered up when a liquid gets introduced to it there is a 90% chance the system works, the other 10% could mean a dead power supply (even when off they still have power running on them) or that you didn't make sure the system was 100% dry when you powered it on.
