Just to comment on the Mac discussion that has been brought up here, the newest Apple TV's version of iOS has been found to be ready for some kind of future app store. Apple also snuck 4gb of flash storage onto it that is unusable by the consumer. That 4gb could of course be solely for loading a video in order to cut back on how much it has to stream, but I have an Apple TV with a 140gb drive (i think it's 140...) that I use only to stream and I know it doesn't even load that much of the video in advance.
It should also be noted that some iOS games have taken advantage of the iPad's TV out to display games in 1080p. Steve Jobs has been the main reason there hasn't been a major push into gaming (the Pippin wasn't released under him), but I'm sure he's seeing this potential now. I'd be amazed if they hadn't made a few prototypes or done some research into the market.

I agree. Considering the amount of games that have been downloaded from the App Store and the amount of game publishing being done on it as well, I'm sure that Apple has given great thought entering the game console market. The Pippin came out almost 15 years ago and the market has changed quite a bit since then, as comrade pointed out Steve Jobs wasn't involved in the Pippin project and it wasn't even an Apple manufactured product (it was designed by Apple, but manufactured and marketed by Bandai)
From what I read on the article I linked to, it seems that Apple could build a console of impressive performance by simply scaling up the A5 chip from the iPad2 so that it included extra graphics/CPU cores. Since most of that development is done the R&D costs would not be much and Apple already has the networking infrastructure in place to support it in the form of the App Store.
Right now the notion of Apple entering the console market is nothing more than speculation, but it would be quite interesting to see Apple come in to the market as the 4th competitor.

Re: poll
well idk if apple honestly sees the console market as a likely source of income...apple is kinda niche except for the iphone and android is overtaking them there because apple is a pretty closed platform from what i hear...thats y a lotta devs and app vendors like android a lil better...
Re: poll
@stu. There isn't a single amount of speculation anywhere on the internet about Apple getting into the console business, the only speculation your refering to is fanmade rumors dating back to 2008. I find it funny you call dated rumors that have long since died out speculation but any sort of speculation of a new SEGA console totally false. Talk about a double standard.
I'll say it again, Apple has ZERO plans to enter the console market, thier I-pad and I-phone are producing the niche gaming Apple wants despite the techincal andriod competition. Apple feels that perhaps the time is right to design a gaming only mobile device for this market and will see if they
can break into Nintendo's empire.
MAC sales have tripled since 2009, they now lead PC desktop sales which in turn are on a steady decline, most PC users are using Laptops more and more. MAC's OS are also outselling and outpreforming Windows 7, Apple has a strong future in the PC market. Its naive to think they don't.

I'd make a hard wager that I'm the most devoted Mac user here, and that's just not true. Mac sales have risen dramatically, but they do not lead desktop sales.MrSega wrote:@stu. Following those numbers, it's impossible to say Mac OS is outselling Windows since Mac OS can only officially be installed on Apple's hardware, although there are Hackintosh alternatives.
Apple's market capitalization surpassed Dell and Microsoft, but that doesn't mean they're selling more desktops.

The only one who is guilty of "a double standard" is YOU MrSega. You whine and complain to the mods when people like me post a dissenting view to your so called rumors. The reason why I call out your "Sega Console Rumors" as false is because NO-ONE in the mainstream gaming press is reporting anything.
Yet when I post speculation from a mainstream source on the possibility of Apple launching a game console, you dismiss the whole thing and claim its outdated fan made rumors etc.
Why don't you follow your own rules, if you disagree with this then ignore it and move on.
As for your laughable suggestion that I am discussing "dated rumors that have long since died out from 2008". Did you actually bother to look at the link I provided? It was dated April 30th 2011.
Go check it for yourself: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digit ... -vs-ipad-2
Unlike you, I prefer to read speculation from a mainstream source like Eurogamer, rather than rely on a combination of a thoroughly discredited, fake source and a couple of vague patents/trademarks for my rumors.
Re: poll
@Comaradesnarky. PC company market penetration remains the same. The only difference is, Thier Laptops are leading in sales, demand and market penetration.
Laptops are becoming way more common to PC consumers, more user friendly, more convienant. Desktops have steadily declined, this is where MAC is making inroads.

Re: poll
Honestly, I can't find any genuine statistics that break down the laptop market. I found one that surveyed 1200 college students and found that 27% owned Apple laptops, however, 1200 is not a statistically accurate sample when you consider that there are probably about 8 million students in different levels of college. It's a skewed statistic, either way, and they didn't divulge how they sampled the students.MrSega wrote:@Comaradesnarky. PC company market penetration remains the same. Having gone to two different universities, one more expensive and another more economical, the one that was more expensive was littered with Apple laptops. On the other hand, I'm usually the one person using an Apple laptop at the cheaper school.
Yes, but, they're not really making as much of an inroads as you're saying. There's no point in arguing hard sales figures, which I provided.Laptops are becoming way more common to PC consumers, more user friendly, more convienant. This is a desktop computer sales chart:

You can see Apple is in fifth place, and IIRC their market share actually slipped during 2010. Not exactly inroads. Their only sub-$1000 computer is the Mac Mini and that's not even that great of a deal.
