How to Reset my Old Japanese Dreamcast Flash Memory?

Post by SDSantosFerreira »

I'm trying to reset the flash memory of my Sega Dreamcast, japanese model, (VA0), HKT-3000. I tried a lot of metods, but it works partially, it just erase the ISP settings, change the language of the system to the default, but don't erase the game data. (Like PSO serial numbers saved on the memory, and something about Chuchu rocket too). I tried the web browser 1.0, dreamshell flash memory eraser by disc and on SD card, an flash memory eraser provided by the Sylverant downloads. But the result is always the same, just erase ISP settings but not the game data itself. I tried a beta version of dreamshell made for this type of DC, the only difference is that erase ISAO settings on the DC. The version RC1 "repack by f0rmoza" i wasnt able to use. It was on an strange format like .mdf and .mds. This version of DC also doesn't recognize the PSO Patcher 2.0. It doesn't boot.

There is some version of Dream Passport that has this same functionality (erase flash memory) of the Web Browser 1.0?

Dreamshell (I use the SD version on DC serial port):

Is this what you used?
https://dreamcast.wiki/Flash_Memory_Eraser
And did this happen?
"When run, it will show the Sega copyright screen and display a red border; when the red border turns green, the flash ROM is erased."

How do you know the PSO serial was not erased?

Do you know of any mods that have been done to the Dreamcast?

This dcflash was my first try, it was the typical result. Just erase the ISP settings, the game data wasn't even touched. About how i know the game data wasn't erased it's because i can go online on PSO normally, the game doesnt request to type the acess key and serial number again.

I need this because of Chu Chu Rocket, this game was the test version of the PSO technology, linking the id of the console to the version or save of the game, something like that.

I can't go online with the original japanese GD of Chu Chu Rocket that I have, because before of this version I was testing games online via Serial port, and I tried to enter online with an american version of Chu Chu Rocket and this is the version tied, in the memory, with my console ID. But running the game on serial port, it enter online but just go to the lobby, it doesn't enter in a game.

I'm pretty sure, that all this problem it's because of the Dreamcasts version that I have. PCWzrd13 couldn't boot PSO Patcher 2.0 on this version of DC as well, he told this in an forum somewhere. I have the exactly the same problem with the PSO patcher on my DC, I can go online on PSO just using codes on codebreaker, to disable the hunter license check.

I forgot to answer your comment. It all happened as you described, the DCflash worked normally. The disc run ok but doesnt erase the game data anyway. My DC isn't moded.

I talked with a friend, an he says he could go online with the japanese version of Chu Chu Rocket. I forgot to mention that. For a very long time i was thinking it was the japanese version of the game that was the problem and wasn't crossplay or something like that, but now i see the real problem is the model of Dreamcast that i use.

I think the answer may be on a manual of a japanese sega Dreamcast. I bought mine without the box and manuals. The trick of erase the flash memory using a web Browser 1.0 it's on an american sega Dreamcast manual, that shows how to do that. I think maybe the japanese version has something similar but with Dream Passport. My DC its the japanase launch version, maybe i should use the Dream Passport 1.0.

I was looking for manuals online of sega dreamcast, but the japanese manuals of the console i don't find, just the american version. I would need to use google translator to understand anyway, bit it's still a light.

But its still a guess. I'm not sure about anything, i'm afraid to buy a Dream Passport and dont work and dont know how to do it. Or even buy a manual and do not have a way to erase the memory. That's why i want so much a copy on internet of the japanese manuals, specially of the launch Dreamcast version, because this version in some apects, works different of all the other models of any region. Maybe the solution is there, but i don't found the manuals.

If someone help me sending me a copy of this manual, i would be very gratefull.

Maybe the issue is most (J) launch models (VA0) used version 1.004 of the ROM BIOS. That's the main difference I see.

I feel the web browsers will only clear their own ISP settings, nothing else.

DCFlash says it only clears ISP and PSO data on the flashrom.

"There's also the alternative to use v1 PW (PlanetWeb) browser and hold B+X at start, but for people who can't find PW browser v1, this one may come handy." (From DCFlash ReadMe).

Found this for PW Browser:

1) Unplug all controllers.

2) Plug a controller into PORT B, with nothing in the slots (no memcards/rumble packs).

3) Put your Web browser in the dreamcast and power it on.

4) After you get the blue SEGA screen, hold X+B. It should be during the loading screen. BEFORE the title, where you click to connect.

If you did this right, you should get to the email setting screen. I Used the first web browser version, never tried any others.

Maybe megavolt85 can help out? He's your best chance at this point.

After reading through the posts again, it's very likely the entire flashrom partition #3 is being cleared. ISP info is being cleared, so if this syscall is being used, all data in the partition has to be cleared.

FLASHROM_DELETE (r7=3)
Return a flashrom partition to all ones, so that it may be rewritten. Danger Will Robinson: ALL data in the entire partition will be lost.
Args:
r4 = offset of the start of the partition you want to delete, in bytes from the start of the flashrom
Returns: zero if successful, -1 if delete failed

The online issue of ChuChu Rocket is caused by something else.

Maybe i didn't use the WB1 correctly, I didn't unplug the memory cards on controller on port B, I'll disconnect the sd adapter on serial port too. But the way i did it before, erase just the ISP settings. I will try again this weekend and see if something changes. For my luck i was the first one to use a PSO acess key on this DC, and i can play it online with codebreaker at least.

The DC checker repair disc has a flash erase routine IIRC, might be worth look if all else fails. Might need a drive emu as it's in GDI format.
