"... the open button is always in its "sunken" positon... Please note that the lid switch inside the Dreamcast is functioning perfectly, however it is just the case that is the problem. "
I'm very confused at what the problem is , the lid won't stay closed and the buttons is stuck down but you state there's nothing wrong with the lid switch? Sounds like the switch is stuck, missing the return spring, or the switch rail is put back in upside down, but all you did was take the top of the case off?

Normally when the lid doesn't lock well it's just the plastic parts that don't slide over each other very well due to grime or wear and tear. Disassemble all the parts, clean them, and try again. If it's still stubborn, use some silicone grease on the moving parts of the locking mechanism and see if that helps...
PS ones have the same problem all the time.

Sounds to be like the return spring is missing. there's supposed to be a small spring ontop of the mechanism of the switch. Is there a spring there? It might have come off or hopefully not Broken off of the mechanism , might be somewhere in the dreamcast make sure its Not inside the dreamcast it might make contact with something Electrical...

For the time being you could just remove the spring in the back.
The one that keeps the lid up...

That won't damage it just removing the spring in the lid hes suggesting so the lid doesn't keep opening on its own if it wont latch shut lol

Use the spring from a ballpoint pen as a replacement.
I just tested it out. Works like a charm.
