Social Networking Sites

I want to start a discussion about the pros/cons of social networking sites. I remember when myspace was still the thing and was a pretty interesting point in my life. As time went by and as social networking sites started becoming more sophisticated (and have basically been integrated with our every day lives) I couldn't help but feel uncomfortable about all that. Its unsettling to know that you voluntarily share personal information for anyone and everyone to see and possibly take advantage of.

On top of all that, its so annoying when I look into my feed and theres just a bunch of crap being posted by people I share little to no connection with. In result of all this I've decided to delete my facebook and just spend my time on forums. Do you think I have a valid point or should I have been more selective with the people I added? I remember having a 1000+ friends and I would rarely talk to anyone intimately.

- Don't post things you don't want the world you know.

- Only add people you actively talk to or see in real life.

- Don't budge for friend requests.

I only have 8 people in my friends list, and to be honest that's already 5 too many and 1 too little...

Add +1000 people and you'll never see the posts from the people that really count, making it more anti-social than social...

yeah I'm thinking about returning to facebook, but I'm going to do it correctly this time. But on second thought I kind of don't want to read about my friends bitching and moaning so .. eh..

You can deactivate the follow function on your friends pages, you know? That's how I have my facebook configured, on the main page I only have news from what I like appear, whatever my friends post does not appear because I don't care about that.

I think this post predates that ability though.
