true, the PC Engine is still the best 16bit (although not a true 16 bit) console of all time

My top 3 favorite games for NEC's PC-Engine family are:

1. Military Madness (TG-16) aka Nectaris (PC-Engine) released in 1989. A wonderfully simple (yet challenging) and addictive turn-based strategy game. Kinda like Advance Wars, only simpler and more fun (IMO of course). This game is second ONLY to the real-time strategy game Herzog Zwei on Genesis/MegaDrive in terms of fun, addictiveness and longevity.

2.) Neo Nectaris (PC-Engine Duo / Super CD-ROM), the more difficult follow-up. Released in 1994 in Japan only. In recent years it was released as Military Madness: Neo Nectaris (for Apple iOS mobiles) and Military Madness 2 ( or variations of that name) for competing mobile platforms.

3.) Aldynes (SuperGrafx, basicly the Japan-only PC-Engine 2, which was just a modest improvement in terms of graphical ability + RAM/VRAM), a very fun horizontal SHMUP with addictive gameplay, kinda like a mix between R-Type,
Thunder Force III/IV and Gradius. Very nice graphics, software scaling and parallax in the later levels. Aldynes was one of only FIVE released games that could run only on a SuperGrafx. The two others were bi-compatible on PCE/SGX. This superb SHMUP was SuperGrafx-exclusive from 1991 until 2011 (20 years!) when it was released on the PSN in Japan.

I very much suggest playing all three, ANY way you can :)

I would like to check out the PC Engine, but it seems from a cursory scan of ebay, that the consoles themselves are unusually pricey! And that I might not really be able to buy one for much under $80.

Researching it, it kind of reminds me of the dreamcast of the 16 bit era. Let me count the ways :)

1) It was small and white (Japanese 1st edition PC Engine at any rate), and the (Japanese console at any rate) was efficiently designed
2) It released before the Mega Drive and SNES - thereby being the first of the generation as was the dreamcast in its console generation
3) It was underpowered compared to its competitors hardware specs, but could still pull off impressive and competitive graphics and sound with the proper developers (as was the DC's hardware and software compared to the GC/Xbox/PS2 imo)
4) It received games released way beyond its actual lifetime
5) It received a small game library compared to the SNES/Mega Drive, yet at a couple hundred games, the library was not exactly small
6) It received lots of arcade ports, and in particular a lot of shmups, as did the DC
7) It is of lesser popularity and somewhat underground compared to other retro systems, as is the dreamcast when compared to the likes of the PS2/Xbox/GC/N64/PSX etc so there is hipster appeal ;)
