Specifically, the Legend of Zelda. I decided it was time to stop staring at Twilight Princess' case and actually play it. I'm having a lot of fun with it, but the wolf stuff (so far) is sort of iffy like I thought it would be. I'm definitely loving the music also.
What I wanted to get into with this thread though is how Nintendo's games will/should change with the upgraded technology that Cafe will have. I'm sure the Mario series will be fine. Miyamoto is always coming up with some incredibly gimmicky idea that turns out being really fun for that series. Where I'm more concerned is with Zelda, which inspired this thread. There was a moment in Twilight Princess (if you haven't played it) towards the start where a kid wants to play with your sword to let you pass by him. The game gives you a yes/no option... but the no option will never let you get past (unless I needed to press it 20 more times than I did).
It was incredibly agitating. Why give someone the option if it makes no difference? Games have changed a lot, and I think the Zelda series could use some updated aspects. I don't think voice acting is the way to go, nor is a deep morality system like Mass Effect or other games, but I think you should at least be able to impose your will in some way. Come on, you're the hero of time. Hopefully Skyward Sword will be different in this regard. It shouldn't take another 5 years for the next Zelda game to begin to modernize its mechanics.
As for other franchises, I think Metroid shows incredible potential on a console that allegedly has screens in the controllers. It's even more exciting with the camera on the controller too. Think of Metroid: Other M where your main TV screen is the 2D action. Then when you look down to your controller, the camera tracks where your head is looking. When it knows you're looking at the controller screen, it adjusts the controllers properly for the first person view.
There's interesting potential for a whole bunch of different franchises here, which aren't necessarily Nintendo.
A new Jet Set Radio where you could spray paint by tracing the graffiti on the touch screen would be excellent and speed the gameplay up a lot. Since I went on to a Sega franchise anyways, it would be pretty awesome to see PSO2 show up. I think the touchscreen would make inventory management a lot smoother, and bridge the gap between PC and console players a lot. The launch window would probably be right as well. MMORPGs usually have long development times, and since we still really don't know much about it, I'd imagine it's probably over a year off still. That might put them into the same launch window, but who knows.
There could be cool aspects added to a game like Splinter Cell as well, or really any game which had computer aspects. No more boring "press A to hack" sequences!
Lots of potential here. Discuss Nintendo first party, the console, or third party games.

Nice post, snarky m'boy
Besides games, What I'm really hoping for is:
*Better Online (no friend codes)
*User profiles
*some sort of achievement/trophy-esq thing
*a LOT more 3rd party support
*New and innovative features
*More "modern" Graphics and processing power (which has been reported)
------
I'm actually pretty excited for this. Hopefully it lives up to the hype.

Good post, I've actually been thinking about Nintendo's new Cafe system and how it is going to change the gaming landscape in general. I noted in the Sonic Generations thread that a lot of Wii owners were not happy that Sega were not planning a Wii version of the game, apparently Sega had mentioned that since the game was being aimed at the HD systems, a Wii version was not possible. It got me to thinking that Sega may well announce a version of Sonic Generations for the Cafe system when Nintendo announce the system at E3 (which is presently what is being rumored). I am expecting Sega to announce support for the Cafe system once it is officially unveiled at E3.
Given that both the Dreamcast and the Cafe system feature controllers with some form of view screen in them I was wondering what sort of games Sega could update from the Dreamcast.
As for Nintendo's own games I think there is tons of potential to make some great versions of Nintendo's franchises.

Just read a very interesting article talking about how the Nintendo Stream/Cafe system's controllers might function. It talks about the system either functioning as a traditional game console or as a lounge based gaming hub where you can take the controller and play the games remotely either through a regular Wireless N network, which would potentially introduce a latency to the game that could affect the playability aspect, or utilized the new WirelessHD tech, which is basically a wireless form of HDMI that allows compatible devices to receive an HD video stream from a central hub. All in all a very interesting article.

Re: Nintendo games and Project Cafe
Well, Nintendo confirmed the Wii successor for a 2012 launch. Of course this could mean end of the year, or early in the year. I think exactly when will depend on if Sonic Generations makes it over. I doubt Sega would bother with a port a full year later, but if they do a March launch like the 3DS then they probably would. I hope they do port it over so that the owners of Project Cafe can expect to have the same Sonic games as PS3 and 360 so the Nintendo owners don't get screwed with the crappy games like Sonic and the Black Knight.stu wrote: Good post, I've actually been thinking about Nintendo's new Cafe system and how it is going to change the gaming landscape in general. that'd be the day; when nintendo actually takes some risk & releases a next gen console FIRST.

Re: Nintendo games and Project Cafe
I think it's probably safe to say it'll be a traditional console. I think the lounge based thing is taking the Cafe codename and running a bit too far with it, but who knows. I don't really see the point of having the controllers stream video from the console. At that point it's just a glorified, far too expensive handheld that can't leave the area of the wireless netowrk.stu wrote: Just read a very interesting article talking about how the Nintendo Stream/Cafe system's controllers might function. I think it's a case of damned if they do, damned if they don't. Probably more wise to do it now since the Wii is only losing relevance faster and faster.mazonemayu wrote:that'd be the day; when nintendo actually takes some risk & releases a next gen console FIRST.
Re: Nintendo games and Project Cafe
I agree, especially not only if they launch it first(before SEGA decides to drop a new console) but also if the budget is affected by the jump in inflation. I heard Nintendo is looking at a $350 price tag adjust inflation and that's $370.mazonemayu wrote:that'd be the day; when nintendo actually takes some risk & releases a next gen console FIRST.
Also, 2012 seems more likely in Japan, not worldwide. Maybe early mid 2013 months in advance of Xbox 3.

Re: Nintendo games and Project Cafe
problem is: nintendo has always been a company that has played it as safe as they could hardware wise & they always charged monsterfees for their shit exept for the wii (don't get me wrong, I like nintendo & have owned ever console exept the nes since my parents gave me an msys back in the day). however; if it weren't for sega bringing out the megadrive, we'd all prolly still be playing our nes consoles, as they're lazy when it comes to bringing new shit out, (although they should, coz its mostly all good; not as innovative as sega used to be, but thats just an opinion off course) they always seem to wait for the competition & then bring something out a little later thats a teeny weeny bit stronger (this is prolly why they're still in business & sega isn't
)
so I'm guessing why would they take that risk now? ok, the Wee sold like hot cakes & they made tons off it, so I guess if they bring something out first & the competition brings their teeny weeny better thingy out a little bit longer nintendo will still be able to take the beating, but still...why?? haven't they learned enough from the(ir own) past? videogame business is a risky one, to say the least...
