This latest news refers to Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) which is the MMO division of Sony. The latest news is that out of the 13000 credit cards that were stolen, only 900 of them were still active. When it comes down to it this is a CRIMINAL ACT, not something done intentionally by Sony. As comrade pointed out SCEI is a division of Sony and since the other parts of Sony are still profitable and can therefore cover any losses from this incident.
The worst that could possibly happen is that Sony might decide to spin off their consumer electronics divisions from their movie and music studios. That would basically allow Sony to slim down and focus more of their energies on their consumer electronics divisions. Some industry watchers believe that this might happen.

Its cool. I just make my point and move on. I no longer give in to stu and snarky's attempts to dispute me, I just ignore them.

Its pretty pointless for them to appear here trying to spin for Sony trying to convince themselves that somehow Sony will make it out of this debacle without repropcussions since Snarky started his own PSN topic request without giving a doomsday senario,(which I've ignored) and yet they come to this topic to spin the whole situation.

$1 billion wouldn't even phase Sony, sadly. They're worth $137,694,000,000. Amounts are in thousands, so you have to multiply $137,694,000 by $1000.

They're bigger than IBM, Apple and Microsoft. The only company I can think of that's bigger is GE. This is going to cause Sony some pain, but... unless $137-$1 = 0... they'll be fine.

You forgot the $10 billion in losses of revenue on PS3 over a four year period, another $2 billion in losses if NGP flops,over another $2 billion in losses on the bleeding of high manufacturing costs which still presist, and $24 billion in losses over the PSN debacle.
Total losses could exceed over $50 billion which would cause Chapter 9 Bankruptcy protection,50% stock plumment, massive layoffs and the official shutdown of Sony Computer Entertaiment(I repeat this again and again since you and stu seem to think that Sony has always run its gaming division Sony is like NEC. NEC had a game division.)
Oh and you are incorrect that a Japanese company can't file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy. FCI/Pony Canyon officially filed Chapter 9 in 1993.

TECMO filed for Chapter 9 Bankruptcy in 1994 and was already on the verge of cutting thier amusment market in half before development on D.O.A. begin. Oh, what's that? NEC Corp also filed for chapter 9 bankruptcy in 1996 and totally shuddered its entire video game R&D division!Within two years, they left the game market behind and returned to being an OEM.

Sony will share the exact same fate as NEC. Mark my words, spin as much as you want defeating the purpose of your own Sony propoganda topic, but its inevitible. Sony will file for Chapter 9 within a year,leave the hardware business in a few and revert back to being an OEM.
