I believe they did some testing and it was working from cd-rom as well.
This was of course without any audio/music playing, which also requires to be read from disc.
And they also got the game down to 200megs.. which means dummy files could be used to push the game assets toward the end/outer part of the disk where the drive can read faster.

this is amazing. i wondered how it can stream the world and handle radio with a regular disc speed...
