I just registered just to chime in. I ordered Tomee HD VGA cable off Gameshack and mine doesn't work. I have tried three different displays, two of them were computer monitors (1080p) with VGA inputs. One was HP the other one Samsung. Then I tried flatpanel HDTV (brand is Visionquest I think) and that didn't work either so I believe it must be broken or sth.
Is there a sure way to test VGA connection on DC? Composite out works ok. I'm pretty bummed because I have no CRT television at home. I'll try to return it and get a different one. Hopefully it'll work.

I do not know what country you are from, so please understand that I am trying to sort this out for you. In short, make sure the game supports the VGA.
Long...
My understanding is that if you are trying a game that does NOT support VGA, you will not get anything (sans boot discs, etc...). Also, there are PAL games like "Skies Of Arcadia" that do not support VGA but the NTSC version does.
Have you tried various games that you know support VGA?

Nowhere in my post I'm mentioning any game. I should be able at least to see boot screen or main menu, or not? All I get is black screen/no signal kinda thing, on all three displays.
I'm in Canada, using NTSC-U console.

This is going to sound really stupid, but do you have the cord plugged all the way into your DC? I thought my VGA box was broken but I put it in more securely and it works now.

Yes plugged it all the way in just like composite cable.

Ok, I did have the same issue with my VGA box as lastcallgames did.
At this point, I believe you may have a bad cable being your latest post clarified your situation. I am sorry you are having this problem and hope whoever you are dealing with will help you out.
Good luck!
BTW, I used to live in Ontario. I always wished they made a special edition pro football game of the CFL like "CFL2k2". I know PS had a version of the AFL (I have found at least six AFL games over the decades).
(Go Ti-Cats!).

I just noticed several Chinese sellers offering what looks like an el-cheapo VGA cable on eBay:

Has anyone been brave enough to try these in addition to the Tomee cable?

I tend to stay away from VGA cables made in that region. For aftermarket DC VGA, look into those manufactured by Cabou (he's a member here) and Beharius over at assemblergames. I own both their offerings and its quality stuff.
I have a Tomee brand but I have yet to use it since purchasing last year. PCWZRD has a video review on his page which I believe he says are good. Adam K. says otherwise tho. May just find out for myself this week

Regardless of the video quality being equal, never buy one of these cables, especially since most of you probably already have a vga box anyway.
Not only does it lack the composite option for non-vga supported games, but you have to buy an additional adapter to convert the RCA audio to 3.5mm for most uses.
Additionally, without the composite option you wont be able to play light gun games on a CRT without physically unplugging it from the back of your console and replacing it with composite, thus "wearing out" the AV port a tiny bit more each time. I understand that with a VGA CRT monitor you wouldn't have this problem, but still...
Also, with this cable you cant even do the switch trick for games like Trickstyle that support VGA but not natively. I wouldn't want to use a boot disc everytime I want to play games like Trickstyle that don't natively boot in vga but have the ability to through other methods.
No bueno guys.

I'm kind of surprised we don't have a thread with a comprehensive list of every game by region detailing whether it supports VGA, requires the swap trick, or doesn't support VGA. I would think that between all of the members here that we have the ability to test every Dreamcast game that exists.
