@CruSega. 32X & Saturn are completely different in design and power, Mars is System 32 based hardware therefore not capable of 3D & wasn't meant to be 3D. Saturn is off-the-self chips of Model 2 hardware. Saturn uses a more complex low res archetecture design of Model 2. Both proccessors run a higher res Model 1 polygon proccessing mechanism and a Quadlateral 3D engine.

Wasn't Sega CD supposed to be Sega's answer to arcade quality sprite based pseudo-3D gaming? I mean it could handle games from the System Y era which is what Sega should have used it for. All that Sega needed to do at the time was port the System 32 arcade hits to the SegaCD and it would have held gamers over until Saturn.
32X/Mars was capable of 500 000 flat shaded polygons per second. Sega clearly wanted it to be a cheap 3D experience which is why they released Virtua Racing and Star Wars Arcade. 32X was neither designed for 3D or 2D but sort of some crossover stop-gap until Saturn arrived. This would be the worst system Sega released to the consumer market and Kalinske, along with the rest of SOA who thought of this junk add-on deserved to be terminated.
According to then-CEO, Tom Kalinske, Sega wanted a tiered console offering like the car industry.
Genesis=Chevrolet
32Crap=Buick
Saturn=Cadillac

"Now, I can sit here and tell you today that no matter how great Saturn is, or PlayStation is, or Ultra 64 is, we will outsell them by an enormous amount with 32X -- simply because of the price."
"And the 32X titles coming out in March and April will be fantastic. Internally, we have seen things that we're working on where 32X titles are beginning to look just as good as the Saturn games."
Tom Kalinske, 1994
This man clearly lost site of what made the Genesis a success and started believing in his own company's hype.
Anyways, Mr. Sega, you can see that 32X was aimed as a low cost 3D alternative to the Saturn and not a 2D system since SegaCD already was quite capable of handling and manipulating sprites.
I don't like to agree with the Angry SegaHating Video Game Nerd on YouTube but when it comes to 32X--"what were they thinking?" Even coming up to its 17th anniversary I still don't understand the purpose of their magic mushroom shaped add-on that nobody wanted.
