For an official release they'd have to reach out to Sega.
I don't think they would license a game for a discontinued console, utilizing the MIL-CD format due to the lack of GD-ROM mastering equipment...
One could dream though.. I'd also buy multiple copies lol

I think regarding official releases it is now easier than ever for a company to sign off on something like this.

Sega could team up with someone like Limited Run and have a game produced and distributed 'properly' without really having to lift a finger as long as it had already been ported or translated.

With something as current as Sonic Mania there probably wouldn't be too many issues but i guess with older stuff there might be more sticking points. Games not owned / created by Sega would present a lot more issues I'd guess but the companies might appreciate a little bit of extra revenue.

Not that the people who embark on these types of projects ever seem to be doing it for the money it would also be totally correct if they got something for the work too.

All very unlikely of course but nice fresh boxed copies of Sonic Mania and Rent-a-Hero would look nice on my shelf

:)

Really excited about this port and just had some question about the possibility of maybe adding some stuff to make the Dreamcast version unique. Sonic Channel had a Sonic Mania/Sonic Mania Plus website for the game and I was wondering if it would be possible to add a internet/homepage to the game that would send you to the site using a modem and a broadband adapter. The site is still viewable if anyone wants to check it out: https://sonic.sega.jp/SonicMania/

Also my other question was is it possible to add the Sonic Mania Adventure shorts to the disc to view?

Nothing about that website is compatible with any pre-existing Dreamcast web browser. In fact, even including any of the retail browsers would only attract negative attention in terms of copyright infringement.

That said, to develop a brand-new browser for the Dreamcast (i.e., something that could be included in Sonic Mania without legal implications) that supports the modern web would be an insane undertaking. I'd love to see it, but none of us should hold our breaths on that one :)

Hey, at least we know the Dreamcast would have no trouble reading CD-Rs

If Sega gave this an official stamp of some kind it would be a massive PR win - free positive sentiment across all the worlds gaming press and another title for the inevitable Dreamcast mini. Makes a lot of sense for zero effort or cost which means Sega will never do it.

It's more the case that this exists in a legal black hole that Sega wouldn't really be able to touch. Remember that this is the result of a decompilation of the game - by releasing the end result of this themselves, Sega would effectively be encouraging the act of decompiling their games. The only way that Sega could contently release this without encouraging people to dismantle their property would be if the port had been made completely from scratch or had officially used the original source code, which obviously isn't how things have happened.

Either way, I'm very hopeful that this can reach completion - particularly if it can use all of the stock Dreamcast hardware without mods (GD-ROM drive, 16MB RAM).

With proper optimizations this could be doable on Saturn as well which could utilize the 4mb RAM cart. Doubtful it could be ported to PSX but Saturn for sure with cart and utilizing every chip like VDP1 and VDP2.Saturn is a hell of a 2d beast lest ye forget. So I have no lack of faith that we will see a fully optimized port of this at the very least at 30fps on DC.

Between this and Castlevania SOTN decomp which will make possible a DC port I am excited for what the future holds. Just compiled a Japanese Saturn ISO into .pkg for my newly jailbroke PS4 Pro and the recent SOTN Ultimate version mod that was released last year runs full speed on PS4. Feels pretty awesome running native on PS4.
