That's just because they have ping respond disabled on their server. I can't ping it either. If you want to use the netopia as a primary router you'll need to enable address translation and set the default gateway to the WAN ip that your broadband router is currently using.
EDIT: oops. What I meant to say is set the default gateway to the WAN default gateway of your broadband router. And set the IP address of the netopia to the WAN ip of your broadband router.

holy crap this is getting frustrating. Installed new firmware on the router and disabled the firewall completely... still can't get 4x4evo to work.

I've used ddwrt on one of my routers before and it worked. You could try that.

hmmm. Well so far routers that worked for me are Neatgear WNDR3300 w/ ddwrt, dlink dir-615 w/ ddwrt, and cisco/linksys e3200 with oem firmware. I didnt test the netgear one with oem firmware. Try putting dreamcast in DMZ see if that helps at all.

Looks like it might be time for a new router.

I was just saying the other day, you don't really realize the limitations of your router until you start doing unusual things with it lol. This shit happens unfortunately. Like I was saying about my dlink router though, this would have been an issue for you if you were using a PC-DC dial in server as well because the data would still be going through your router.

I guess i shouldn't complain to much since the fact that ANY dreamcast game is still playable online is pretty much a miracle at this point, i'm still pretty bummed that only 2 of my 4 online games are usable.

Re: New method for connecting Dreamcast!
Be sure to read my notes on that router. It does something really weird with the OEM firmware.
D-Link DIR-615
The issue with the DIR-615 is a pretty major one and it appears to be specific to this setup (ie dialing into the netopia on your LAN). I noticed this when i bought one to replace a Netgear router about 6 months ago. Essentially what happens is every time something dials into your Netopia router the D-Link DIR-615 acting as primary router on your network instantly crashes and reboots, disconnecting all clients on your LAN including PCs and such. This happened using the latest firmware version for the router which I believe is 3.13NA. The fact that this router can crash from certain network activity is alone reason for me to advise anyone not to use this router if it is an option. However there is a solution to this problem if you already own one. Instead of returning the router I decided to install DD-WRT( http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index ) on it which is a custom router firmware and this completely resolved the issue I was having which is purely software-related.

Re: New method for connecting Dreamcast!
Well finally got around to getting out the dir-615 i got and went to get it set up only to discover i have a hardware revision that is not supported by dd-wrt or tomato due to the chipset.
Gonna try it with the stock firmware anyway but looks like i might have to try yet another router. time to throw some more money in the crapper....
