Last week I bought an XBOX HD pack and a VGA to Component Transcoder so I could play titles in 480p on a CRT monitor. I did consider getting a decent 1080p scaler so I could use my LCD monitor but it seemed too expensive and old school PC CRT's are a lot sharper. Anyway here is my setup:
Softmodded PAL XBOX -> HD Pack -> Transcoder -> CRT Monitor
Soul Calibur 2 in 480p..looks better here than the game's 720p mode for HDTV's
Ninja Gaiden Black...this looks fantastic in motion
Guilty Gear XX
Monitor is an old 17" Hansol. I tried the set-up on my friend's 22" Lacie/Diamondtron and picture quality was the same. Seems most PC CRT's handle 640x480 the same.
Anyone else done something similar?

Re: Original XBOX VGA Output (480p)
There is actually a mod you can do to have xbox output VGA natively. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=624248 I was thinking about getting an extra xbox and trying that at some point. It looks somewhat involved but it i imagine the vga would look slightly better than component. Right now I'm just using the component cable to my tv which looks pretty damn good. There are actually a few xbox games which can be displayed in 720p or 1080i if you are using that cable. This is a good reference to check what res each game supports http://hdgames.net/
