Kaz Hirai is finally going to address Sony's consumers and tell them exactly what the hell is going on. The conference is planned for 1 AM EST time tonight (tomorrow morning, whatever). He's apparently announcing a timeframe for getting PSN back online, which seems to mean that it won't be back up any time soon. On the 26th they said "within a week," but if that were true, then I don't think a timeframe would be needed.
At this point... what the hell can he say? "Sorry about our terrible communication and you guys getting screwed on MK9 and Portal 2. It won't be back up for another few weeks. Here's a free crappy PSN game." I think this is going to really damage the progress PSN has been making, and obviously really damage the reputation that the PS3 has been gaining.
Devs aren't going to care about Steam Works integration if there's no one who feels safe buying their games. There's going to be a huge stigma about DLC on PS3 and the same goes for PSN titles.
Microsoft will probably use this to keep Xbox Live a crippled service by standing on a soap box, puffing out their chest and saying how safe their customer's information is due to their safe guards.
I think Kaz Hirai will be out after this mess is cleaned up. I'm sure investors have wanted his head on a plate since "RIIIIIIIIDGE RAAAAAACERRRR!" It would be stupid to out him now because it would make Sony look even more incompetent and disorganized.
Their best strategy might be to make PSN Premium free for all users for a year and drop the price of the PS3 at E3. I'd imagine PS3 sales have more or less halted with this news, and I doubt they'll come springing back to life once this is over. This will seriously damage the PS3's reputation.
Depending on the status of PS3 sales after this, I think it could lead Sony to drop the PS4 a bit earlier or move the NGP ahead.
Please don't bring "death of Sony!" stuff into this thread. It's a ridiculous claim. They're one of the largest media conglomerates in the world. Same goes for the "no PS4" claim.

Re: PSN Fallout
Well, I was right about the free PSN Premium, but just a month as opposed to a year.
Could arrogant Sony muster up an apology, though?
Of course not.

Re: PSN Fallout
I'm pretty sure that's the greatest web comic I've ever seen. That perfectly captures Sony's attitude.
