Re: New Ring hybrid photos leaked(RINGEDGE mockup? Or Hoax?)
So your telling me that sometime THIS year microsoft and nintendo will release info on their next gen console? Are you positive about this information. B/c the last few promises people have made about announcements have bee completely false. Can you provide a link showing that Sony is in 10 billion dollar debt b/c of the PS3. Because from what I've heard, its selling better than the 360.

Re: New Ring hybrid photos leaked(RINGEDGE mockup? Or Hoax?)
This is all just too farfetched to me.
If you look over their stockholders statements (the ones that allegedly disclose that they are ceasing third party development in 2012; nothing in the statements says this), you see that the consumer business only had a net income of 1,416,000,000 yen. This is a considerable amount of course, but their pachinko division pulled in 26,950,000,000 (these numbers are from 2009, however). Both of those numbers roughly doubled during their 2010 fiscal year but, that still leaves the pachinko division kicking the shit out of the consumer business. Amusement machine sales did four times the numbers of their console game sales in 2010, and that's a purely Japanese market, not worldwide.
One thing I find particularly curious, however, is that Sega reports no research and development spending in its financial statements. It's impossible that they don't have R&D costs. However, it's not illegal to with hold information in yearly financial statements that might divulge future plans that need to be confidential, as long as the larger shareholders are in the know.
I also highly doubt this since Sega's release schedule is relatively well stocked for the time being. If they were releasing a new console, you can bet your ass that they'd be locking down future Yakuza titles for it, and that doesn't seem to be the case.
Sega made a statement that they planned to revitalize arcade hardware with the Ring boards, and I think they genuinely meant it as it sounded (that is, specifically pertaining to the arcade business), especially with amusement sales doing better numbers than video game sales.
With all of these promised reveals that have come and passed, and allegedly distributed dev units, something would've leaked by now. There didn't seem to be a single dev that kept their NGP dev units a secret. Even if Sega did have something planned, you can be damn sure that Kinect turned those plans upside down. Sure, it's not really attractive to the "core" gamers, but it's selling like mad, and it changed the game.
These are just my cold, hard business instincts though. It's not that I don't want another Sega console; it just doesn't make sense financially. I mean come on, that comparatively tiny amount of yen from video game sales compared to their arcade sales and pachinko sales? That's only going to get smaller if they relegate themselves to one system, and it is about the money.

There is going to be a Playstation 4. Sony has been making profits on the machine for almost a year now: http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/pla ... sole-sold/ They are already designing a new PS4. It will be a long ways away yet though.

Actually, they've just postponed it. And no, they ARE losing money on PS3. It continues to bleed money from them and they are taking in heavy losses on poor North American demand.Favrenation wrote:There is going to be a Playstation 4. PS3 remains far behind 360 in North America,in fact 360 has been leading heavily over its contenders in US.) even though its doing well in Japan and Europe.(ironically these markets are WAY smaller than America's before 2001 Japan's console market was just as big.) SCEI is taking losses on the biggest region.sega2k wrote:So your telling me that sometime THIS year microsoft and nintendo will release info on their next gen console? And MS and Nintendo's next consoles are set for 2013 not 2012, they still are in early development.

Re: New Ring hybrid photos leaked(RINGEDGE mockup? Or Hoax?)
I am still not understanding where you are getting this info. In late 2009 they made the system so it only costed 240$ to make. They are making a profit on every system sold and since 2009 PS3 sales have increased significantly. While not beating the 360 is sales that does not mean that Sony is losing money on the system. I'm not a fanboy for any system or anything but I follow this stuff all the time.Actually, they've just postponed it. And no, they ARE losing money on PS3. Profits made on PS3 for two years cannot and do not make up for 4 years of manufacturing cost losses, price cuts and inaqadaute demand poor overseas sales, low market penetration.Favrenation wrote:I am still not understanding where you are getting this info. Where am I getting this number? Simple. You take $2 billion in all losses and low revenue, $2 billion in losses on 7yrs of R&D PS3 begin development in 1999 and was completed in 2005, 4 years of unsuccessful sales with a revenue amass on failing to sell the product at its wholesale. PS3 losses total an estimate of $10 billion.
SCEI is worth $50 billion. $10 billion in losses is not chump change. Even though PS3 is making Sony a profit, it can't make up for the losses in revenue. Its going to take them years to fix this $10 billion dollar hole thats hurting them.
You need to read the Japanese link again on NGP, it says PS4 postponed,Larrabee production halted,PowerPC IBM stopped.
Why? Because they simply are in no shape to built a PS4. They've taken too many losses. A console powered by Larrabee would nevertheless be difficult and expensive to program and SONY would have to sell PS4 for $500($520 adjusted inflation.) That would drive them into more debt.
Trust me, if there was a PS4, game sites would have already been talking about it this year, info would have been leaked out and a trademark for it would have existed. There is NO "Playstation 4" trademark at all. Period.

Well that sure does clear up the facts. I mean you threw out a lot of numbers. I guess I would have to trust you since I have no other sources. If sony does not make a new console then that opens up a HUGE gap in the gaming community. There are millions of people who a very loyal to sony. So maybe sega can fill that void and convert people over. Hopefully.....

Sony is in no place to sustain heavy losses? They're a consumer giant. The entire corporation's profit last year was 437 million. Even if the PlayStation division lost money for those years, they will make it back through their other divisions.MrSega wrote:Profits made on PS3 for two years cannot and do not make up for 4 years of manufacturing cost losses, price cuts and inaqadaute demand poor overseas sales, low market penetration.Favrenation wrote:I am still not understanding where you are getting this info. Billions are indeed large numbers, but Sony produces a multitude of other products. They can sink as much into the PlayStation as a pet project as they want. You think they're not going to release another PlayStation when they're sending another handheld into slaughter? The PSP was an unmitigated disaster when you look at their console success and the DS' numbers.
The NGP is a million times riskier than a new PlayStation would be. They're pushing a portable platform that produces incredibly high end graphics while developers are already saying that development costs are far too high. They're asking developers to invest millions of dollars into an area that Sony has had little success in. The NGP already reeks of Sony idiocy and an early death; a Sony engineer has said that if the NGP was run at full strength, the battery would die in minutes. However, Sony has the money to throw away putting such processors into a unit that can't even feasibly use them. Of course they're going to lock those processors to a lower speed to work with the battery life, but it's still the fact that they can just recklessly spend money like that.
A PlayStation 4 is inevitable, even if development is allegedly on hold. It doesn't have to use the Larrabee processor and it doesn't have to use PowerPC either.
