Yeah I figured that out but it's not really worth doing as it still looks weird and you lose valuable text space. Leaving it as is seems to be the lesser of two evils. lol

Yeah I found that odd as well. It does that everywhere where the text is replaced. I haven't really looked into it much yet though. I'll let you know if I need some help with it.
I solved the issue with the black letters. It seems the game only does that if you replace the text with standard "Western European" encoded text. Using Shift-JIS encoding fixes the problem. Oddly enough I can just replace the first character of the word or sentence with a Shift-JIS encoded character and type the rest normally. Really strange but it works.
I've gotten almost all the item and spells translated! Also did the descriptions for quite a few as well. Things are progressing nicely now that I've gotten used to how things should be edited. I'm not as worried now about small changes breaking things so I'm doing more in bulk before testing.
