with the diodes like that won't pressing one tactile switch trigger left and right at the same time? it looks like it would

Yeah, you're right. Both switches do exactly the same. They are the same node.

Just wire up one of them.

i think my original setup fixed that because it blocked it one from doing that

It doesnt look like its correct.

One of your buttons will trigger A,B,Start,Left,Right;
the other one will trigger only Left.

this should be correct, now each diode will block the other direction from being triggered.

haha np, glad i got it all sorted and i'm looking forward to setting it up.

edit:
i also had some of the controller port traces the wrong way around so now it's fixed:

Great job on the Maple Bus adapters and R&D !

I can see this being a far more economic, DIY alternative for interfacing keyboards and mice to the DC, vs. obtaining original ones or getting two of those expensive ($25-$40 each) and hard-to-find EMS Total Control 5 PS/2 keyboard/mouse adapters. The EMS PS/2 adapters have been out-of-stock pretty much all this year (either due to COVID or discontinuation), and I was wondering if somebody would engineer a DIY interface.
