Videogames Hardware Handbook

So, I was in Walmart today when this caught my eye:

Image

The Videogames Hardware Handbook. It's basically a book telling the history of video games from the Magnavox Odyssey to the Nintendo 64, one console at a time. This was the latest edition of the magazine, and needless to say, I was intrigued. However, when going through the table of contents and skimming through the book, there were some...questionable choices made.

For example, the two Sega machines that had their own sections were the Genesis/Mega Drive (duh) and...the Nomad? Why? I know it was impressive for being a portable Genesis, but was it really significant enough to get its own section? The Saturn has a much more interesting history, being the dark horse of the big 3 consoles of its generation. I know most "professional" game magazines hate the Saturn, but they really should have given it the limelight for a couple pages like the PS1. They even gave the 3DO the spotlight, so why not the Saturn?

Also, why stop at the fifth generation? I would've liked to see a sixth gen section describing Sony's brilliant strategies to win over non-gamers with the PS2, Microsoft entering the ring with the Xbox and, of course, Sega making their Dying Moment of Awesome with the Dreamcast.

I'm sure it contained some good information, but the exclusion of some notable systems, and the inclusion of un-notable ones, seemed strange and off-putting.

Yeah, that's lame. Thankfully, we know what the notable consoles really are. ;-)

Bummer. When I read the title I thought it was a book with schematics and stuff.

Would've been an instant buy if it had...

True, the sixth generation should’ve been in there at least, coz from a technical standpoint, it is the most important one...people and main stream in general have all but forgotten about the Dreamcast and the OG Xbox, which was (lets face it), the beast of its generation. I’m playing Bloodrayne 2 on my Xbox as I write this, and I’m amazed at how good this game still looks today, It literally shits all over the PS2 version and that’s saying a lot, coz the PS2 version actually looks pretty good...as for the Saturn...it has faded even more into obscurity (a co worker of mine who is 30 years old, and an avid gamer, had never even heard of it, until I educated him ), it is up there in the hall of heroes, sitting next to the PC Engine...

Like I said, I'm sure it contains some useful and interesting information, but the noticeable lack of some consoles, mostly Sega's, pressed me not to buy it.

Welp, I found another article about the Saturn, and I almost threw up while reading it.

"Let us know if your parents were clueless and got you a Saturn instead of PlayStation in the comments."

How about I tell the editor how clueless he is?

ikr. Especially when it was on the front page of a Google search for "sega saturn", below another article called "Why the Sega Saturn was the worst major console of all time" from CNET.

Read that article before, typical example of a spoilt brad who didn’t get what he wanted and didn’t even give it a chance
The saturn is still on my top 3 list of fav consoles of all time, but then again I always was a sucker for arcade games
