Console Wars: Who Won '08?

According to NPD Group, Nintendo flat-out owned the all-important month of November by selling over 2 million Wiis, better than twice as much as the next closest competitor, Microsoft's Xbox 360 (836,000). And at over 1.5 million DS systems sold, Nintendo tripled the output of Sony's PSP (421,000). While those numbers weren't nearly that high through most of 2008, the general order -- Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony -- held strong throughout.

I guess Nintendo won but the Wii is more of a gimmick gadget then an actual gaming console.

XBOX 360 came in a dismal second. I just got off the phone with my friend who went through 4....yes thats right....4 XBOX 360's because they kept breaking. I told him I would have strangled the game store owner if I bought something that expensive and it broke so many time.

PS3...........well.....lets just say I fear for their employees. They will be downsizing very soon because of the PS3. I think its up to 2-3 billion dollar lose now...and counting.

Below is my humourous look inspired by the Coolinator! Thanx, Cool - I love your post!

1. Sony PS3 - I guess because I hate things they do at the company and the fact that it was their introduction of the PS2 "Entertainment System" that killed the DC - not due to better games or better system (link below). If they went away, they're boastful users that waved the PS2 flag at our DC faces would feel what we felt. As far as Sony goes, they have been arrogant since the Sony Betamax. Disclaimer - Madden is an EA Sports game, so Sony does not have that to tote being Xbox has it as well.

Also, in my occupation, I have to talk to them (Sony Japan) once a year during their tour of North America. It's usually about tech things involving their Audio/Video products that we do not like.

2. MS Xbox 360 - All I have to say is G4 did one of those crash tests with it as well as the PS3 and Wii. Xbox came in last (link below). Madden likes the Xbox, that's for sure! Japan hates it, even the Dreamcast had a moment in 2006 where it outsold all Xbox games from Play-Asia.

3. Nintendo Wii - Well, I do not own one but from what I know, it's found a market that always sell. No matter how many times you can say Bullet For My Valentine, Beatles or Green Day is better, mom and dad is gonna buy that Jonas Brothers or Naked Bros Band CD for little Suzie. Susie hates BFMV and Green Day. Mom and dad made up her mind to hate those violent Xbox games and that expensive PS3 machine. That little cute Wii fits in her bedroom or in that small spot in the living room just fine. It has all those Mario games and Samba De Amigo. Well, the family/kids market always drives the sales of entertainment, ask Mickey Mouse! Gotta love the cute "toy" car the Japanese drive around in (see link below)!

yes mazonemayu you have a point. i also want to add that its a bit odd that the only console that does not try to play movies is said to not be a gaming machine. it seems the wii tries to focus more on gaming. its downfall is the wiimote and lack of horse power. if more developers start giving the option to use game cube controllers i would be much happier with my wii. on a side note some games use the wiimote very well. one such game that i have been playing is star wars the force unleashed. though it might not look as nice as the other versions it is pretty fun.

I cringed when they were breaking all the next gen' systems. Those things are so dam expensive and they were kicking them around like they were tin cans.

I have a Wii parked right next to my Xbox and Dreamcast and I love playing it; and I consider myself a gamer. There are plenty of fun games for it, there are deep games for it, and the controls are more then a gimmick as I believe they are one of the first real leaps in console interaction; a truly next gen concept that I choose to support.

As far as processing power, well I can tell what is going on on screen and it is more powerful then my Xbox1, who was no slouch for visuals.

I had one problem with my Wii, and it was fixed by Nintendo, free of charge, within 3 days and not one problem since. Although my Wii Wireless adapter took a dump, but I just hook it up via a hard-line nowadays...

I probably will by a PS3 though, but I am waiting until the price drops again and DC universe comes out.

really? i think the Xbox looks nicer for the most part. i am comparing the newer Xbox games to my wii. some wii games look nice, but others look like repacked cube games. project gotham racing 2, NBA 2K7 and forza all look better than anything i have played on wii thus far. the best looking wii games i have are Mario Galaxy and Mario kart.


i should note that i use S-video on my Xbox and normal RCA jacks for my wii. i am sure this helps the Xbox a little bit.

In terms of sales the Wii won I guess. Even thought everyone who I talk to never plays it.

In terms of graphics and games however the Xbox 360 beats all even though the RROD is always around the corner

and PS3 in such small demand Sony actually went back to supporting the PS2!
