Right now I'm waiting for an RGB Scart cable to arrive because it only had an RF lead - which was a surprise that any gamer would have been using that in the late 90s

It depended on where you lived I suppose. I’ve had a few UK Dreamcasts and they all came with RF, but my original one that I got here in Belgium when it was released, came with the official RGB cable from Sega themselves.

I'm in the UK and I suspect that the inclusion of RF cables with "our" machines was the result of Sega's experiences in the UK market with the Saturn. At the time, I'd read that retailers had received complaints from customers that a SCART cable had been included and not an RF one. This was strange because most TV sets sold here since the late 80s featured a SCART socket.

Speaking of SCART, my cable has arrived I've tried it on three different TVs - one of which never fails to detect any signal from 80s computers, set-top boxes, DVD players, consoles etc and on all three I receive a black screen, with sound on just one occasion. Am I correct in assuming that the cable is faulty?

3rd party cables are often shit. It could be however that the connection is a bit too big, try putting it in with so’e force (not ramming it in, but pushing it as far as you can). Sometimes they have a bit of a bad connection (I have this with a PS2 cable, it has to be inserted at a certain angle or I have purple a image), connect everything, fire up the DC and gently wiggle the plug a bit. Also clean out your port with a q-tip and a bit of alcohol. If that doesn’t work you either have a bad cable or a busted video chip.

Wiggling, pushing the connector all the way in, removing it and then reinserting it did the trick. Thanks, I was on the verge of returning the cable as a dud!

Now I can happily say adieu to the RF signal. :D

Welcome to the DC scene Jase.

I wish I could go back to playing Crazy Taxi for the first time and get this unforgettable sense of satisfaction.
