Hey all, long time no see. My PC is broken currently so using PS4 to type this message so unfortunately no way to post links and images. That being said the engine was recently made free in June in the title of the post. If memory serves me right, Red Dog used it on the DC as well. Just thought I would make our resident developers here aware. There were some games that should be well within the capability of the DC to be able to run, well Carmageddon 2 might need optimization but there should be something potentially great to come from this flexible engine. Google "Croc engine made open source" and you could find out more information about what all this entails.
Edit: Here is the link to the engine now that I managed to fix my PC.
Here is the Github page.

And some reddit posts where one of the Argonot Softwaare guys posts who was the one who actually released it.

And news article about it.

Apparently the major hurdle to releasing the Carmageddon source code was due to the engine being licensed, so now that is good it should be possible they fully release the source for both of those first 2 games as well. I will update the thread if I hear anything about them. My main hope was that new games could be made with the engine too.

After reading a bit, it seems the source code for the engine itself is there on GitHub.
But is there any news of releasing the actual source code of the games that use it?
Without the games source code you can only build the engine/sdk.
It seems there was an early attempt at reverse engineering Carmageddon1 using Microsoft's XNA studio, it's called OpenC1.
And there's a new project called Dethrace: https://github.com/dethrace-labs/dethrace
This one seems to use SDL and shows some nice progress.

Yeah that is another step that is required, but for instance, Carmageddon 2 source was not released yet but hopefully, it can be possible soon. I will try contacting Stainless Games and see if we can get an official response from them. I know that Carmageddon 1 had an Android port which I used to pay a lot. So I am guessing they possess the source still at least for the first game? I will see if we can get a response. I used to go over to my mate's house after school and we would take turns playing this awesome game at the turn of the century on his PC. Damn, I feel old loll.
Also, the great thing about this engine, is that Argonaut CEO Jez gave permission for any developers to both use the engine for retail game releases, as well so this could be quite a good engine for making indie games for DC.
Edit: Ok I tweeted @Stainless_Games so let's hope we hear a response.
