Maybe a silly question but is it a ton of work to take the driver out of a later version of mame and add it to the older version ported to the DC?
I have mame on a raspberry pi, which I think is a port of mame circa 2003 to take advantage of speedhacks that were part of mame at the time, however there's several games that it supports like dodonpachi daioujou, which were not supported or added to mame until after 2003. I'm not saying DC could support dodonpachi because that game would require too much ram, but something like batsugun, which is on 1991 era hardware and is like 7mb unzipped could maybe be an option.
