DVD IDE on Dreamcast, is it possible?

With the IDE mod, it's possible to connect a DVD Drive IDE on the Dreamcast.

So, my question is, if someone write an application for DreamShell would it be possible to get a DVD working on the Dreamcast?

Seems doable. I don't know much about that stuff, though. If it is, the DC will finally be able to play DVDs! Take that, PS2! :P

I'm just curious, why would you want to do that besides the novelty?

LoL it would be only for fun! Everything from the hardware is already done! If possible is just missing a software (I know it would be hard to do, but it would be cool to see the Dreamcast running a game from a DVD drive   ).

Almost sure the DC has no power to decode mpeg2.

It's certainly possible to do so, there's just absolutely no point. Heck, you can take it one further, like I did:

Since it's kinda not a very good picture, that's a Blu-ray drive rigged up to a Dreamcast. ;)

Very nice! It would be a nice way of replacing DC Drives and maybe expanding the possibilities of what one can do. Take that PS2, Dc has Blue-Ray!

It "works" but there's nothing really to show...

I mean, you can't run DC games off of it (Blu-ray drives, like any other PC drive can't read GD-ROM discs properly), it obviously can't play Blu-ray movies, and there's absolutely no homebrew code that can do anything with it other than my little test program. Heck, my little test program doesn't do anything all that interesting with the drive either (all it does is reads the identification from the drive, and attempts to read a few sectors back to make sure it was working).

It'd be possible to replace the GD-ROM syscalls in RAM with versions that'd read from that drive instead (like how DreamShell handles IDE hard drives), but there's really little point to it, as reading from a hard drive is a much better solution than burning things to disc and sticking them in there. ;-)

If you all really want a video of me running my test program, I suppose I could do something like that at some point, but as I said, it's really not all that exciting. ;-)
