Ah yes.

I'm assuming that number is all your looking at. Seeing as it is all you mention. Had you read the report, you would see, yet again, that the Amusement sections dealing with arcade operations grew in almost every field, including sales and income.

The consumer business, having pumped more money into publishers, giving them larger budgets and even having sold more games on the other hand shrunk in most areas including income, despite increased sales.

This is nothing new, as SEGA's Amusement divisions have always been a prime source of it's earnings since it's leaving the consumer hardware market.

Is $500 Million enough for a new console? Sure, If sega knows what it's doing. Does that mean SEGA is making one? No.

Steve jobs wanted Apple to build it's own cell phone network and carrier for the Iphone. Apple had 40-50 Billion in cash at the time. Could they have done it? Absolutely. Did they do it? No.

Little comparison.

Nintendo, the smallest, pure gaming(no multimedia or extras), console manufacturer, with the cheapest console and weakest one ending 2011, Pulled in about 13 Billion in revenue. Their net income? A LOSS of About 1 Billion dollars. Which means that after all is said and done, Nintendo in taxes and sorts could not pull in that extra Billion that was invested in them, so they had to trim down.

Sega, Pulled in about 5.1 or so Billion in revenue. Out of that they have managed to escape with about 535 Million that is theirs to invest as they pleased. Between taxes and such, at sega's current stage, they would at minimum need to pull in at least 4.6 Billion to make some sort of money, which would only increase if a console was released, wereas console sales themselves are not a guaranteed thing.

Again, Nintendo is the money maker of the generation, and they took the lowest budget console, but look at the kind of money they need to pull in to stay in the black.

Logic does have a point Dan.

However, the "ORBI" brand trademarks bears alot of monitoring. Based on its description, dozens of consumer products could spawn from it & help SEGA bring in tremendous extra revenue over the next couple of years that could put them back in black.

As for the second prompt I certainly think it's more than feasible. Especially with the Sega Toys division for Sega to branch off into small secondary products to make extra money. Claw machines, plushies, mini mp3's, you name it, I believe it's more than likely for Sega to throw some money into secondary non gaming products. I don't see a problem with that at all, seeing as their Amusement divisions have needed expertise in the field to do so.

SEGASammy has had 3 straight years of healthy revenue & decreasing Operating Income which indicates they're earning solid profit and are saving a substancial amount of budget in R&D. Its widly known in Japan that SEGASammy also sells toys,accessories,trinkets e.t.c. The ORBI sounds like a new investment company that will allow SEGA to be involved in everything from food products,clothing,overseas vending
machines,electronics and their parts to industrial material.



As for the forecast earnings, I would say that probably pretains to the first half of this year. If plans for an Android gaming tablet are still on the table(its budget is believed to be only $300 million) you can couple that with smaller markets, digital multiplatforming,mininmal 3rd party titles from the previous year,Amusment Machines,Panchiko. $500 million or more sounds plausible especially if SEGA were to sell the dc Pad/RINGBOOK niche, one would believe that they would earn high revenue and modest profit on these investments.




The full year earnings forecast report is set for March 31.

While a nice Indicator of Sega's Willingness to keep it's arms to itself, a 10 year renewal is a standard within the US. A company that fails to renew a trademark every 10 years will lose rights to the trademark, the same way one will lose a trademark if one does not enforce it in some way for 3-5 years

1. You said "Conglomerates". You expressed a plurality so I was expecting more than 1 or 2. Which you did not provide

2. Facebook makes 1 Billion in profit alone. All they do is get spammed walls and cheesy browser games which creates a communication medium away from the walls.

The strengthening of the yen hurts Japanese corporations.
Hitachi is investing heavily into that german thermal product, money of which they are obviously not seeing return.

The only part of Hitachi not experiencing actual growth portrayed in the article is their TV's which don't seem to be in demand. Qualcomm tried the same thing, and they also failed.

Sega's profits aren't rising up to meet Hitachi, but rather Hitachi's are falling towards Sega's level.

Or should I remind you that, Sega is itself part of a conglomerate? So thank you Dan, really. One part of a conglomerate makes more than other parts of another. This is like saying Samsung mobile makes more than than Sony Mobile. Well yea, they do. That doesn't mean they are up to something( probably are sinking R&D into new panels). It just at base means that Samsung mobile made more money.
