Question about cleaning + fixing gear noise

Post by EskiM0JOJ0 »

Planning on thoroughly deep-cleaning my Dreamcast. Is it safe to wash heat-shield in warm soapy water?

Also, as a fix to the GD-ROM reader noise, I've seen people online suggest applying lithium/silicon grease (not sure if difference matters) as a lubricant on the gears and spindles. Even saw someone using Olive Oil. Would WD-40 or "3 in 1 garage door lube" be a safe alternative? Worried about damaging internals.

I've used silicone grease on the worm gear and main drive motor and the difference is very slight, but noticeable. I'd steer clear of using any petroleum lubes on plastic, tho. Wd40 is probably fine, but it stinks, and with low viscosity it has the tendency to 'fling' about.

....and it may eventually end up dissolving weaker plastics in the case. Probably not for a long time, if ever, but the smellis enough reason in my book.
