pop'n music 3/4 on gdemu

Post#1 » Sun May 21, 2023 8:41 pm

hey there,
i'm trying to get pop'n music 3 and 4 working on my dreamcast. i bought a modded one with a gdemu (no clue if it's a clone or not) about 2 years ago and it's been working fine but when it comes to swapping discs i'm totally clueless. i keep seeing mention of a button which i've tried using in the disc swap menu of pop'n 2, but nothing happens. i've changed open_time and detect_time to 2000 and tried holding the button for longer and it still doesn't work. am i doing something wrong?

Inside your GDEMU.INI file, try using the default settings for the open_time and detect_time parameters.

Here's the GDEMU operation page for reference.

Code: Select all

open_time = 500
detect_time = 250

EDIT: It may also be possible you have one of the clones with a faulty (or non-functional) disc-swap button.

As an alternative, you could also search for the hacked append discs that skip the disc swap. That way you can directly play 3 and 4 :)

I had a quick google to see if they were easily locatable but doesn't seem like they're popping up. I do have a dump of all DC scene releases somewhere so they'll be in there. Not that I need it, as I can disc swap on my MODE.

think it was Echelon or Kalisto that done the no append discs..... if memory serves correctly.

pop n music 4 no append is in https://archive.org/details/DreamcastSelfBoot it seems.

These would be great to hunt down. I'm not nearly a big enough fan of these games to do the legwork in building such a hack myself. However, downloading ready-made disc images would be cool!

I can't believe I didn't think to check the SelfBoot CDI repo on the archive, I just assumed it wouldn't be there! Here's a GDI version I just built for anyone wanting it.

Pop'n Music 4 - Append Disc (Standalone Version) [GDI].zip
https://drive.google.com/u/0/uc?id=1uSKy9GDgkIH2j5AT92q_4qOWLwcz_XYg&export=download

I may spend some time analyzing how this "4" hack was achieved so that I can do the same for "3".

EDIT: By the way, looks like the release group was "RZP". If they ever did similar hack for "3", I can't find it.

EDIT 2: Well that was easy! Here's the GDI and CDI for "3" :D

Pop'n Music 3 - Append Disc (Standalone Version) [GDI].zip

Pop'n Music 3 - Append Disc (Standalone Version).cdi

EDIT 3: For anyone that just wants the patches themselves...

sorry for not replying sooner. i managed to get it to work - right after i select yes in the disc change menu in pop'n 2, i have to press the disc swap button on my gdemu once or twice (once for 3, twice for 4) as fast as i possibly can for it to consistently work. any later and it straight up doesn't work, no clue why. thank you for the help everyone!

You can also just use the patched GDIs I shared above so that you don't have to ever worry about disc-swapping again ;)
