Help with playing backups on japanese dreamcast

Hey guys this is my first time finding and posting in this forum so please forgive me if these kind of posts are not allowed.
So basically I picked up a Japanese dreamcast recently to replace my previous north american model with power and laser issues. I had specifically been looking out for one that is MIL-CD compatible so I can run a burned copy of a codebreaker boot disc to play games of other regions, like I did with the my last console to play japanese games, only in this case I wanted it to play my north american discs. I used the following document to find one that matched up with a MIL-CD compatible model: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Rf7rPn ... EHYvq/view . Both the stickers on the back and the metal fan inside would lead me to believe this is a japanese Type-A launch model, and should be able to play backups. However I've been unable to really get anything to play. My codebreaker boot disc I would use in my previous dreamcast to play other region games would not get past the dreamcast bios menu on the new one. And a weird pirate disc I got from a friend with a bunch of capcom fighters and ikaruga on it, would actually get to the splash screen that showed the sega logo and the creators of the hacked disc, BUT it would just black screen immediately after that, which makes me think maybe theres something else going on here since it gets past the bios menu. The laser seems to be in great shape as I havent had a single problem in any of my dozen or so japanese discs. I guess Im just wondering if I misunderstood the document and my dreamcast is NOT MIL-CD compatible, or if theres some particular way I need to burn discs for an early or japanese console or if theres something Im missing? As I understand the burned discs do not check for region correct? Just kinda running out of ideas here and would love some input to figure out the problem. I attached some pictures that show the stickers on the back and metal fan, as well as some of the numbers on the front board. Thanks so much for reading, let me know if you have any ideas.

The laser is dying. CD-Rs are harder to read than legit GD-ROMs which is why you can still read legit games.

Aw I guess that would make sense, didn't really consider that. Are they easy/cheap to find and replace? I have some pretty rudimentary soldering skills. Really I just want to play legit GD-ROMs but from 2 different regions if possible.

Not really that cheap, especially for an early model like yours. It's very easy to replace the entire GD-ROM drive though. Just remove the 3 philips screws around the GD-ROM drive, pop it off, slot the new one in place, and replace the screws.

Here's the correct one for your Dreamcast:

at this point if you are replacing the drive I wouldn't buy another laser I would replace it with a GDEMU because with all the disk rot that has been happening I would rather play the games off an SD card so I wouldn't have to worry about damaged disks
