Hello I was wondering if it's worth spending the 80 bucks for the dreampi to get my Dreamcast online if I do I want to make sure the community will still be there after time it seems like it would be a waste if I did and nobody was going to be online

For me it's worth it, I play online at least 3 times a week for more than a year now.

I answered a similar question on reddit a few months ago, so I'll copy that answer in here for you to have more information about it, the question was something like "is it worth it to get online and how to arrange games":

The long answer:
The community is active but small, on https://dreamcastlive.net/
there is a schedule tab there you can check the next events, most events always have players ranging from 4 to 10, even more sometimes and the numbers are slowly increasing. PSO is another thing, you can always find players and about 20 players on the saturday events, some times it has even reached over 35.

For arranging your own matches you have 2 options, no matter which one you choose as your favorite I recommend you to have an account in both:
1.- The forum: creating a topic on index.php
or go to the discord channel of the same official forum, which you can find on the top right corner of the same site (more information bellow). At the forum the suggestion is to create a topic in advance, the day before for example, and check for answers during the day, this is specially helpful if you are looking to play a game with a higher number of players
2.- Discord: to get here, as I said before, you gotta go to the forum and click on the discord button on the top right corner. Once inside you will find a small, buy friendly community, it is probably the best place for getting to know the members a little more, arrange faster matches (but even here is recommended to ask for a game a couple of hours in advance) and chat in real time, we also play with voice chat if you want to join, specially on Quake 3 every friday night. Once you get to know a little more of the community you will already know whom likes what and so you will be able to ask the right people for matches faster or directly.
3?.- Jumping into random games: you can always check who is online and playing what on http://dreamcast.online/now/
that site automatically shows what are you playing if you are using the dreampi method, it has it's bugs too and sometimes keeps showing people that already disconnected. When you see someone online there playing something you wanna play it's a nice idea to try to contact them on the forum chat (simple chat window on the forum) or on discord so they know you wanna join (I've never heard of someone being rejected on a game unless the room is full and they are streamingthe matches or something, like a group of friends on a full room), it gets easier the most people on the community you know, since then you can send direct messages on discord.

Most played games?

PSO is on another league, but every friday you will find people on Quake 3 Arena, on saturdays there is usually people on racing simulator monaco or other racing games, I'm trying to make Thursday chuchu rocket nights a thing, so you are welcome to join too. AFO is very popular too and the connection is really stable. I don't have a ranking for the other games, but every game is played on rotation every wednesday and sunday, so even if you like a game that other players don't care about that much you will still be able to find people every other month or so.
