Master System/Power Base Converter for Genesis: Problem

Hi guys, I'm a little bit perplexed regarding my recently aquired Power Base Converter. It's the original model and it just doesn't like my original Megadrive; the console it was designed for. Although I've taken the converter apart and cleaned all the pins thoroughly (q-tips and alcohol), all my Master System games just keep crashing/glitching. However when I removed the outer case and popped it inside my Megadrive 2, the converter works absolutely fine! So basically it won't work with the model it was designed for but will work with the model it wasn't designed for! >_<
All my Megadrive games work fine on the console in question and the capacitors and soldering inside both the converter and the console seem fine. Could it be an "ageing" issue?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
