Tribes franchise is now freeware

I don't know if this is the right place to put this thread, but as of yesterday the whole entire franchise is now been re-released to be freeware. What's really caught my attention is that all of the games are PC games except for the third game, Tribes Arial Assault, which is a Playstation 2 exclusive. I haven't heard of a game on that system to ever be free to download and play since the the PS2 has some of the most nastiest anti-piracy control I have ever seen in gaming. It's also worth noting that the game came out before August of 2003 meaning it lacks DNAS coding which basically blocks modified and pirated games either booted from some form of digital and/or physical medium, and anything that uses a bootloader such as Magic Swap, Game Shark, Code Breaker, or Action Replay cheat device, and Memory card exploits/save data like Free Mcboot , HD Loader, and USB Loader.

I used to play that game years ago when PS2 games online was still relevant, and then stupidly sold right before the official servers shut down , and not realizing that there are unofficial servers out there. Then again the game was on a PS2 CD-ROM format which were notorious for defective pressings and the console just flat out refuse to load the game due to the anti-counterfeit measures Sony used throughout the PS1 and PS2 lifetime.

Does this mean we can do whatever we want with this game? Like port it to Dreamcast!?

I don't know that they released the source for these games. If they did then yes we could actually get the earlier games ported over to the DC granted a team of people wanted to do it. I am interested in the earlier mech games. I am downloading Earthsiege 2 ISO right now to see if I can get it running on windows 10.

Uhm... I'm reasonably sure that none of this is Open Source, so no, there's basically no chance of directly porting the game to the Dreamcast at all.

Also, saying that it is public domain isn't right either. Public domain implies that they've relinquished the copyright on the material, which is clearly not the case (the bottom of the page still has copyright information for all the material therein). It is true that they've released binaries of the games (and the various data files) freely, but that's a vastly different story than public domain. Calling it "freeware" in the traditional sense would be much more appropriate.

I just corrected the thread title and post to reflect the changes made that was brought up upon earlier today. Anything else I goofed up on, don't hesitate to ask.

That'a not to say that any of the games can be ported to the dreamcaast , Hi-rez would need to give permission first and hardware requirements and limitations would have to be met and accounted for.

for example starsiege tribes and tribes 2 could most likely be ported to the dreamcast but if tribes aerial assault makes good use of the PS2's 32MB RAM then porting to the dreamcast may require some compromises

I really don't think that Arial Assault pushes the PS2 very far since most CD-ROM based games aren't aimed to utilized an architecture so complicated that a person who suffers a chronic illness like Asperger Syndrome to fully understand the SDK. Although the game was great and all and can be had cheap (obviously not the only option anymore legally) the game play mechanic was centered more towards online play by a 8v8 player count. So if that can not be done, then obviously that would be to either downscale the core game or be not worth porting over.
