Sega announces the Astro City mini

Hi all,

After announcing the Game Gear mini to celebrate its 60th anniversary, today Sega announced a new console joining the trend of the "mini" retro movement: the Astro City Mini. It is said to include 36 games but only a few were announced for now:

  • Virtua Fighter
  • Fantasy Zone
  • Golden Axe
  • Golden Axe The Revenge of Death Adder
  • Alienstorm
  • Alien Syndrome
  • Columns II
  • Tantoa-ru
  • Dark Edge
  • Altered Beast

The small arcade cabinet can be plugged to a tv/monitor through HDMI. It also comes with 2 USB port in order to plug controllers sold separately.

Retail price: 12800Y + tax
Release date: 2020.12

Controller price: 2780Y + tax

More info on the official website: https://sega.jp/astrocitymini/

The Game Gear mini website being in both Japanese and English languages since day one, it is unknown if the Astro City mini will get release outside Japan.

While I think this is a cool news, I am more excited to the idea of the potential games we might get. Especially ones that are hard to emulate like Planet Harriers (as discussed there). So far no Naomi game have been announced, so we'll see.

It's probably the first mini console I've genuinely been excited about. Will be interested in seeing what the other games will be...

Interesting! Once again Sega looking at their fan's work is pretty great.

I read that the Sega's version will be using the same material (plastic) than the real Astro City.

I hope games made after 1996 make the cut. The final list will be crazy if they do this. If not will it be worth buying it?

I definitely agree with you. It is really likely that we will get the fan favourite classics (Space Harrier, Outrun, Super Hang On, Shinobi, etc.) but just like you, I'd be thrilled for less popular titles... Especially late ones (Naomi).

This has me interested. Sega has such a rich arcade library that has never really been ported anywhere. It depends on how powerful this thing is and which boards they can support. I'd love to see some of Sega's racing games that never came home, but digital controls might make the emulation not up to standard. Just gonna have to wait and see.
