I have spent numerous years (on and off) looking for a copy of the Metropolis Street Racer rankings from Dreamarena. Since they were held behind a closed network, they were gone for good once Sega switched Dreamarena off. While I understand a game's official leaderboard cannot stay online forever, I feel they should capture the most up to date rankings and release them as a basic Notepad file before closing them down.
Leaderboards are sometimes an integral part of a game and should be saved in some manner, not just switched off and forgotten about. Preserved leaderboards could be useful to players discovering the game at a later date; it tells them what could be achieved if they wish to play the game to a higher level(ie fastest lap in a racing game).
What are your thoughts? Should video game leaderboards be preserved in some fashion, or simply switched off and forgotten about?
