Here's a few options:
Thankfully, pretty much all shmups have a scoring system, so there's no trouble with that.

Ikaruga
Giga Wing 1 or Giga Wing 2
Under Defeat
DUX
Border Down
Last Hope
Zero Gunner 2
Gunbird 2

...That's the ones I can think of. REZ is not included because it's more of a third-person/rail shooter like House of The Dead 2. That genre will be dealt with later.

Congrats to rjay63 for winning with a difference of more than $1000 dollars!

Next to the voting for next week's game (18.10.-24.10.):

Zero Gunner 2 made it.
The rules are simple: Arcade mode, the highest score wins.

And the genre we'll be voting for is...
Puzzle games
like Sega Tetris, The Next Online Tetris, Wind and Water Puzzle Battles, Puyo Puyo 4, did I mention Tetris already?

Good luck!!

No rules for difficulty level?

Anyway, here are the links I promised. I have YouTube videos for all 3 helicopters, the quality isn´t that good though (filmed with a camera from a CRT).
Hokum
Apache
Comanche

Following part can always be found in the video answers. I´d recommend the Hokum, best for beginners and best for many advanced players, too. Apache is good an alternative if you want to crush the bosses fast and Comanche is just very difficult to handle.

Last but not least, my strategy guide. If anybody cares about reading that much. ;)
The stage walkthroughs are not done yet, didn´t have enough time so far.

Are Bomber Man and Chu-Chu Rocket considered Puzzle games?

No one playing Zero Gunner 2 yet? Don´t be afraid, I won´t have much time to play this week.
And I´m gonna choose very hard difficulty.

seems like tetris would be a good fit for puzzle games. just about everyone has played it before.
