Definitely watch some youtube videos of game you're interested in. The top games have also skyrockeyed in price lately. I would suggest looking into the JP import versions of some (non-rpg) games because they will be much cheaper. Many people frown on it, but a way to play burned games is a great way to try something out before you commit to potentially dropping a good chunk of cash.

Also $50-60 is a good price. I was looking for a second Saturn recently and was hard pressed to find one in good condition at that price point.

Continuing with what SEGA RPG FAN said, you really should budget in a "Action Replay 4M Auto Plus" with your initial purchase. They cost about $25-$30 USD and makes your console region free (so you can play Japanese games) without internal modding. They also double as a 4M RAM Expansion card which allows you to save games and unlocks the ability to play other games like X:Men VS. Street Fighter. They will save you a ton of cash in the long run and will also double the games library you will have access too.

I've always wondered, does it work the other way round as well? Jap Saturn + Action Replay = play US & EURO games on your Saturn?

Much like the Dreamcast, hardware is not region locked but you may as well install this so you can also play backups :) http://ppcenter.webou.net/pskai/

Well yeah obviously, but when you burn a game for trying it out and you really like it, don't you buy it then? (If it doesn't cost $1000 that is  )

Yeah i love owning real copies of retro games (Especially Saturn games with the long box :)) However even though Panzer Dragoon Saga is right up there with shenmue as the best game of all time its hard to justify spending half a grand on a 20 year old cd

Prices are getting ridiculous. I gave in and sold my mint copy of Burning Rangers for almost $400. I never really got into it and it was just money on the shelf.

They can pry Saga out of my cold dead hands though :)

I echo everyone else's sentiments. It is most definitely a worthwhile console.

For the games that don't have any sort of language barrier, definitely import. Japanese Saturn games, as long as they are not Japan-exclusive, tend to be fairly affordable.

Panzer Dragoon Saga is just absurdly priced. I forgot about that dream a looong time ago.

But a lot of the fighting and racing games are not so expensive if you import them. Even some of the shooters aren't crazy expensive. (but then again, some of them are, like radiant silvergun).

If I had to choose a favorite... I guess Virtua Cop? It's lots of fun with a light gun and it's one of those games you can just play for ten minutes and relax your mind. Panzer Dragoon 1 and 2 are great, and again the import versions aren't that expensive.

Saturn Bomberman Fight is one of my favorite bomberman games.

If you know Japanese, apparently it's an RPG monster. Too bad most of those titles were never localized.

oh and Sonic R is lots of fun, dont believe the hype.
