Getting online with 4x4 Evolution

Sections
A) Configuring your Dreamcast's internet settings.
B) Getting online
C) Setting up your Gamespy account
D) Creating a match
E) Playing with PC and Mac players, plus Closing notes

A) Configuring your Dreamcast's internet settings

The first thing you need to do is configure the Dreamcast internet settings. If you have already done this you may be able to skip this section. But if you find that you are having trouble connecting to the game server please review this section.

You configure the internet settings with your copy of 4x4 evo by selecting Network from the title screen. After you select Network navigate to "Configure internet connection" there is only 7 basic fields that can be filled in using 4x4 evo.

1) "Outside line prefix"
Only enter something in this field if you need to dial a number to reach an out side line.

2) "Call waiting prefix"
If you wish to block call waiting you can enter a prefix to block it. In my area we use *70. yours my very so if your not sure what to use try *70 or contact you phone provider. note that this is not required for playing 4x4 evo online. how ever if you have call waiting you may experience disconnections if you do not use a block prefix.

3) "Dial up number"
Here you will need to enter the local phone access number given to you by your ISP

4) "Dial up login"
Here you enter the user name from your ISP account.

5) "Dial up password"
pretty self explanatory. Enter the password that goes with the ISP user name.

6) "Primary DNS"
This is where the game gets screwy. If you don't enter the DNS correctly you may suffer from connection failures. I recommend that you use this one. 68.94.156.1

7) "Secondary DNS"
this one is just as important as the first one. I recommend you use 68.94.157.1 these DNS numbers have been tested by me and are known to work. If you have your own DNS information provided by your ISP you should use it instead.

B) Getting online.

To get online simply select Network from the title screen. Then select connect to the internet. As long as you set up your internet settings correctly you should have no trouble. If it fails to connect I suggest reading over section A) if that does not help check your phone line to be sure that it is working correctly. If all else fails contact your ISP and ask them for DNS numbers.

C) Setting up your Gamespy account

If you want to set up a Gamespy account here is the place and time to do it. You will only have to do this once. And after you have created the account Gamespy will remember your nickname for future games. It's simple to set up. Select "Create a new Gamespy account and login" from the list. In the "Email" field, enter any Email account. It does not matter if it's old and no longer exists. Under the "Nickname" field, enter any nickname that you wish to use, excluding all expletives! In the "Password" field you may enter any password you wish. Make sure you use an email and password that you can remember. Also try to keep it short. This needs to be entered in every time you want to use your Gamepsy account. If you want you can set up your profile but it is not required.

D) Creating a match.

After you are logged into Gamespy you may enter one of the servers on the list. Often only 1 is listed. USA (Lewisville, TX) Go ahead and enter that server. Now you should get the Welcome to 4x4 evo screen. This screen explains the chat server rules, hit (A) to get to the next screen. You should now have a list off rooms for this server. Evo1 seems to always be here. If you wish you may create your own room. If not just enter Evo1.

Now onto setting up a game room. Navigate to your name and hit (A) go down to "Host game" and hit (A) again. You should have the "Game Room Quick-Help" screen. Hit (A) to skip it. The game menus are pretty self explanatory so I will not go into them.

E) Playing with PC and Mac players, plus Closing notes

If you want you can join someone else's room. I would recommend that you do not do this unless you know the host. The reason for this is it may be a person playing on their PC or Mac. If so they will most likely want to use custom trucks and tracks. It is possible to use custom tracks on the Dreamcast, but you must download them to a VMU. That might not sound so bad but they often want to change the tracks after each race. This would mean you would need an endless amount of VMUs to have all the tracks they use on hand. This is unpracticed and a pain in the ass. Avoid PC player rooms if possible!!

It is ok to let PC and Mac players in your room. If they ask you to change the track to some weird track just tell them no! It would be a good idea to not let them use their custom trucks either. They will use supper trucks on you. You won't be able to win with the trucks that are on the Dreamcast. Not even a fully loaded race truck can take down some of these monsters.

closing notes. i tried to make this guide so that anyone could understand it. No matter how much of a noob they are! so i put a lot of information in here that most people would have figured out on their own. if i missed something please feel free to inform me and i will edit this guide as needed.

Only two games are supported by BBA, which is PSO and Q3.

You'd have to pay for a dial up isp to get on 4x4, Starlancer or max pool using Dc.

What's your opinion on this game? Just wondering if it's worth picking up a copy. Are there many people still playing it online?
