Dream in the Dark (New Port)

Hi all,

Just letting you guys know that what free time I have right now will be spent porting Alone in the Dark (I-MOTION) to the Dreamcast (a port I call "Dream in the Dark"). A wobbly port was made in the early 2000's called "Free in the Dark", and seeing the source code on my computer a few hours ago gave me the idea. If finished, I'll release it for free - all you would need is to have a copy of the original Alone in the Dark (GOG sells it). I *think* the demo can run, so I'll go ahead and pack it in.

How many people would like to have this? It's a disassemble of the original code (hint: barely legal?) but Mr. Raynal gave permission to the original author to do it, so I'm taking that as my cue. I've only started looking and studying the engine but it doesn't seem difficult at all to port. I've gotten it running in Linux as a start, and since the GL is so simple I can port it in no time. I'm only worried about cleaning up the majority of the bugs left in the original code.

Currently only Alone in the Dark 1 is supported most of the way through.. it has collision detection issues I think I can graft up using some custom code of mine. I'll keep all posted on updates. The other "inthedark" games have major issues, unfortunately.

Since writing this (at dcemu), I've gotten it running in both Windows and Linux, and started converting SDL over to KOS (which is a bitch since I've little to no experience porting SDL). Alone 1 works, Alone 2 has huge issues, Alone 3 does not run at all. I will post video progress soon of the engine in action.

I own this game for Saturn but I never played it. I would love to play it on DC. If you port Alone in the dark, I'll fill this gap in education as soon as it spins in my DC!

The one that came out on PS1 and Saturn is the second one.

Dream in the Dark is a port of the first one.

No worries, this port will be able to play the first game along with the second (though, to a lesser extent as more bugs are present). Here's a shot from the second game, though transparency sorting is non-existent it seems:

Lots of debugging lies ahead. I really also want to rip the awful model format out and replace it with something like MD2, but I'm not sure how much of the game that will break, seeing as everything will have to be remodeled in the format. Though, I suppose I could keep a dual option for modders...assuming this thing can ever be modded in any capacity (read: easily).
