Considering Switching AtariOwl Project to Dreamcast

Hi Guys

I was working on a project on another platform for a while, but some time ago I became somewhat disillusioned and took a long break.

I'm considering starting up again, but on the DC instead... which was something i originally had in mind eventually anyway.

Not sure if its something that would be interesting, or if I'd be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Also i'm reluctant to have to fight as hard to get something adequate going as i did on the original hardware on which i was working.
Can anybody help me figure out what i need to get started? What the coding options are etc?

Cheers
AtariOwl

Your post doesn't have any information about your project in it.

This all depends on what your project is, what specifications you were developing it for initially, and how you were developing it/wanting to develop it (ie: programming languages, opengl, pre-built engines, etc).

For general development discussion, I think you'll have better luck on the dcemulation.org forums than here.

It's been awhile since I looked into things, but you would need to setup a "kallistiOS" development environment so you can program in C. Unless you want to do a quake or doom mod, kallistiOS is the way to go - all the latest high quality indie releases (gunlord, Sturmwind, etc) have been programmed in kallistiOS.

People on dcemulation can probably show you how/where you can get the latest version and any documentation/homebrew code examples. There are various ways to test your code, via emulators, or on the real hardware if you can afford to throw $100 at a broadband adapter, or some other technology solutions. I think you need a *nix machine/partition on your pc in order to compile for the DC's SH4 though.

I say go for it, reasons being:

1) the DC scene is always happy with new developers (meaning you'll prolly get it sold :p )

2) the hardware is all the more powerful

3) someone has yet to give you a 3D game so people will follow it with interest

Hard to say if you should. If its a 3d engine from scratch (using Kgl in kallisti os) thats a bit iffy , I remember some guys at dcemulation.org said the current opengl implementation was inefficient so they were working on their own faster version. Iam no programmer so I dont know. With that in mind Iam not trying to scare you off, just letting you know the current state of 3d on the dreamcast.

I guess it's unlikely to be as big a pain as it was on the Jaguar.

Not sure i have the energy anymore for a struggle though.

I seem to have picked up a coder's cable.
No idea what to do with it though, send software on the PC end? Bootdisk on the DC end?.

Go here and ask( its the dreamcast programming forum):
http://dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=29

The guy(bluecrab) who usually maintains KOS for the dc helps people there on a frequent basis.(dont know if he would help for that specific question though...)

But yeah thats one way, the other way was to burn a multi session cd that could be use more than once( not sure how to do that anymore) or buy an expensive broadband adapter for faster transfer speeds.

I think it'll be ok though, if he managed to program that for the jaguar, he knows his stuff so it'll go twice as fast for the DC ;)

Well hopefully. But I'm not as patient as i was then.

RE: BlueCrab
I seem to remember that name, maybe i talked with him a few years ago when i first thought about it.

I have pieced together dcload, various serial things.

I can;t seem to find DCDEV ISO R? anything really, is that still around?

I dont think the dev iso r4 is around anymore as I remember Bluecrab stating it was far too old(might be remembering wrong). You might have to go get it at the sourceforge site.As I stated Iam not a programmer so this is probably the most I can do for you. If you still need help with it you should go register at dcemulation.org.
