I've bought 2 orange pis for a new media center I work at and regretted it to the fullest.
NO DOCUMENTAION AT ALL, or very poor. The GPU driver is (still?) half baked.

Honnestly, get a raspi. I can't vouch for ODROID as I never tired one.

The orange pis were NOT a smooth experience at all, and I've meesed with linux systems for a while now.

This is the reason why we would need an image like the one for the raspberry pi. We need it to pretty much be plug and play so that someone with no experience with an orange pi could build a Dreampi based of a short guide like the current Dreampi's. The trouble here are the very things that you just outlined. The upside is that it is cheaper.

You're right.

Talking about otherdevices, i'm getting an Onion Omega 2 sometime in december and will see if I can hookup a modem to it and get something to work. It has builtin wifi and is basicly a router with linux.

Can't wait to try it out.

konio38 wrote:I have an orange pi and for general proposes i love it, it was cheap about 10 euro (compared to the 40 euro that costs me to by a Rpi) although i must warn you, the orange pi is not directly compatible with the Rasbian images, so you will have to install a compatible linux distro for the device and then manualy configure he python script for dreampi, something i havent been able to achive and i have been stugling for quite some time.
So if the price diference is low, just to for the Rpi.

Did you try to run the new version of Dream Pi 1.5? That's one of new features:

"The Pi's firmware has been updated which should bring better device support".

I don't know if Kazade is referring to new devices like OrangePi, BananaPi etc. or only the Raspberry family.
You could give it a try, it would be great to have a fully working DreamPi device for $9.99.

Why don't use Raspberry pi zero? Maybe will cost a bit more but I think its a good solution.

1. Raspberry pi zero ---> 6 euro
2. zero4u a usb board --- > 7.40 euro http://www.uugear.com/product/zero4u/

Mainly it adds support for the built-in Wi-Fi on the Raspberry Pi 3. It won't make it any more compatible with knock-off Raspberry Pi's.

Has anyone had any luck yet with devices other than Raspberry Pi? I purchased a NanoPi, OrangePi, and C.H.I.P. with the hope of at least one of them running Dreampi.

A few people have gotten the DreamPi scripts running on stock PC-based Linux distros (Ubuntu, probably). As long as you install pppd and python, I _think_ it should work OK. The only issues I can foresee would be issues with DC Now, since I believe it's included in binary form, meaning it wouldn't work on other architectures. I'm not sure if the source for DC Now has been posted anywhere, but that's a question for Shuouma and/or Kazade.

DC now code is included right alongside the Dreampi script. The problem is likely that it needs dnsmasq installed and configured with logging enabled.

One day I'll find time to package all this up... :/

I use the DC Now client script on Xubuntu while playing my Dreamcast online. The only major change that I made to the script was to make sure to look for logged dns queries explicitly sent from the Dreamcast IP address. Sending information about dns queries made from my laptop would be a waste of server resources. Also, getting dnsmasq configured took some time to figure out.
