Saving/ restoring PSO on the server

I save my game on the server like a good boy

But...how does restoring work exactly? Say if my vmu goes corrupt, do I lose my char forever or do I just make a new one, go online, restore and save to the vmu again to recover the lost char?

If not, what is the use of the backup online?

You'll need to keep a backup save in case of corruption. You only have to do this once since it doesn't matter how old it is. You just load the backup save, go online, restore it using the server backup, and you're good to go.

If the game just freezes and your save wasn't corrupted, you can just restore from the server to get your items back.

So... Let me explain a little how server-side saving works...

The game sends a good portion of your character data to the server in certain circumstances (like, loading into the lobby). Using /save simply saves that data into the server's database under your guild card number (using /enablebk on a registered unique serial will essentially do this automatically when you go into a team -- but to a different database table entirely). Unfortunately, the server-side backup doesn't include everything. It includes the basics, like your character's appearance, name, level, stats, and inventory. It doesn't include your banked items/meseta, battle/challenge statistics, or your offline progress.

Now, if your VMU were to get corrupted, it's pretty easy to restore what the server knows about... Just create a new character with the same name (and class, optimally) and do a /restore from the same slot you saved into (or a /restorebk if you've used /enablebk -- just make sure to do it before you go into a team).

Oh yeah, and does this also work if your DC were to die and you replace it, make a new char & take it from there? A friend of mine's DC recently died and he had te replace it...

Didn't know you could restore from a newly created character. Good to know. Probably still best to make a local backup occasionally though since the online backup doesn't include some things.

As long as you have the same guild card number, yes it'll work (which will always be the case if you register your serial number/access key on the website and use the same SN/AK on the new DC).

If you end up with a new guild card number (i.e, you're using a shared serial), then you'll have to get me involved to fix it. ;)

Yes, a local backup is always the best thing to do, of course.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I thought I'd be better off posting here instead of creating a new topic.

I've now registered with Sylverant, and backed-up my two chars using the save function (/save) for the very first time. It worked seamlessly, and now I can't believe that I played for all those hours back in the day without having back-ups!

I just have one question: once I have enabled the automatic backup function(/enablebk), do I need to login with my Sylverant details (/login) each and every time I connect to the servers for it to work, or will it work without doing so?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.
