Ultra Game Players + EDGE on 'Saturn 2'

Last year, I posted a thread containing Next Generation's articles that chronicled the long road of hardware development for Dreamcast, from Black Belt to Dural and Katana.

However there were many other articles in other magazines. So I'm posting two more sets of articles, the first series from Ultra Game Players, reporting on Sega's plans beyond Saturn, namely Saturn 2. First as the rumored upgrade for Saturn which would allow graphically impressive translations of Model 3 games; Virtua Fighter 3 and Scud Race. Then moving firmly towards two prototypes for an entirely new console that would eventually be known as Dreamcast.

The second set, in the next post, from EDGE magazine in the UK, their version of Next Generation.

Game Players / Ultra Game Players magazine 1996-1997.

You're welcome.

Knowing how badly-equipped the Saturn was for running 3D polygon graphics, and how powerful the original Model3 Step 1.0 board was in comparison, I think it was both audacious and ludacris for gamers to believe that AM2 could have ported Virtua Fighter 3 to Saturn without a CPU + GPU + memory hardware upgrade, while still keeping 60FPS framerate gameplay in-tact and looking better than, or as good as, the VF2 port at the same time.

Here's an analogy. Sega trying to port VF3 to the standard Saturn, as it was with no hardware upgrade, would be like DICE trying to port Battlefield 3 to the PlayStation 2

This post is mainly about the 3DO / Matsushita M2 technology, which Sega did evaluate and ultimately rejected as a possible replacement for the Saturn. The later articles tell us what the reality of M2 technology stood vs the hype (pre-rendered promotional stuff that M2 could not do) and it compared to Sega Model 3 board (not as strong) and Nintendo 64 (significantly more powerful). Also noteworthy is that the unreleased M2 console was not the last piece of technology that 3DO was working on. They were developing MX (basically an M2.5 or M3 and at least on paper, the M4).

As we know, the 3DO M2 was one of many technologies that Sega considered along the way before arriving at the final hardware specifications in mid-late 1997 for Katana, the Dreamcast launched in 1998.

In red boxes and/or underlines, the most interesting parts.

Remember the quotes in the red box with this:
"Where Model 3 will leave new high-tech rivals such as 3DO's M2 for dust is in the amount of RAM available"

Now keep reading about M2's actual capability:
