DreamShell issue... help needed, please.

So I used "DreamShell 4.0 RC 4 + Boot Loader" to make a disc that my DC reads and loads... but then I get to a screen that reads:

DreamShell boot loader v2.4
Boot from RAM
Boot from CD

I don't have the SD card reader but I just wanted to see if I could run DreamShell from the disc... I can't get it to "Boot from CD"

What am I missing? Did I download the wrong cdi file? Any help is much appreciated...

Thank you,
Roger

The "+ Boot Loader" version looks for all the DreamShell files on the SD card so that's why it won't boot. You'll want the regular "DreamShell 4.0 RC 4 CDI Image" which has all the files on the disc if you want to get any further without the SD card reader.

Well, that did it... it sure does give the drive a workout though... a lot of grinding when reading the disc. Gotta get me an SD card reader to hopefully lessen that.

Thank you,
Roger

I'm fairly certain that in order to run it from the SD card you need to install a modded BIOS. But I'm not 100% sure of that, if that was not the case I'd probably have done it by now

Can you flash/update the BIOS from the SD card or do you have to take the DC apart and replace the chip to do that?

Thanks

Nope, you just copy most of the files to the SD card and use the boot disc it comes with to load it. If you have a modded Dreamcast, you can flash DreamShell to it and remove the need for the boot disc.

I see thanks for clarifying. When I needed to use modules not in the standard RC3 image a few months back I ended up re-launching it from the SD card via command line herpberp

If my DC is un-modded, is there any way to do everything from the SD reader (without using the disc reader)?

I just got my SD reader and I'm trying to figure out what to do with it... I'd like to not have to use the discs at all.

Thank you,
Roger

Burn the boot loader and put the "DS" folder (that it came with) in the main directory of your sd card. Then after it boots it will mount the OS from the sd card. After the Dreamshell logo appears the disc will stop spinning.

using the dreamcast modded, I flashed, several bios etc. but I could not figure out how to switch from dreamshell to devbios screen and vice versa.
In sd loader mode even if I press the start we did not possible to exclude from sd boot. Is there a way to make the switch between the two modes? or is the dreamshell limit; I ask forgiveness are still inexperienced.
