Sega GT Launch Promotion

Post by MalditoComm »

Hey everyone,

I recently found an old article online talking about a promo Sega did for Sega GT. The grand prize was apparently a Dodge Viper, but the more common prize was a Sega GT racing jacket. Unfortunately, I can't find much about the promo online anywhere. Does anyone remember this (I don't, I was 9 at the time)? And has anyone seen one of these Sega GT racing jackets (either photos or in the genuine)?

It must be another one of Sega's lies about this game, on the back cover of the game it says that it has 22 race tracks..

I don't remember exactly how many tracks are in the game, but do mirror versions of the tracks exist? Could that bump up the number to 22?

Anyways, I don't remember anything about promos for the game either. Was this a US, Euro or Japanese promo? I didn't get the sense the game made any sort of splash in the US or was subject to much hype, so that would have been quite extravagant to give away a Dodge Viper for it.

There was much more hype for Sega GT 2002 on the original xbox. Could the promo have been for that?

Found some links about the competition (followed a lead from the old Usenet/Deja archives on Google Groups). It was related to Sega GT for the Dreamcast as it occurred in late 2000. Basically you needed to answer 3 questions correctly and then you would be entered for a prize draw.

Win a Dodge Viper GTS!

We know why you're here. You want that Dodge Viper GTS, don't you? It's one lean mean driving machine - the kind of car that most people only dream of driving. Thanks to Sega and Dodge, one lucky driver will be turning heads with this ultimate dream car!

We do have a little test for you. You didn't think there wouldn't be a catch to us giving away a Dodge Viper GTS, did you? You need to correctly answer these three questions about Sega GT in order to qualify for the drawing. They're not too hard, and you can find all the answers on the Sega GT website if you don't know them already.

After answering the questions filling out the form below, take the Dodge Viper on a virtual test drive in Sega GT. It's the Dreamcast game that lets you fine tune your nerve as well as your racecar. Get tips from expert Benny Moto on the Sega GT website to help your game. If you haven't got a copy of Sega GT - it's on sale in the Sega Store.

You can also win a Limited Edition Sega GT Dodge Viper racing jacket or one of 100 Mad Catz steering wheels!

You could find the answer to the questions on the following Sega GT website: https://web.archive.org/web/20010712012 ... &x=23&y=13. The Wayback link to the 'full game site' is broken however you can find it here: https://web.archive.org/web/20030205180 ... _home.html

On a side note, I don't think PAL DC users ever got an online ranking set up for Sega GT. Just a 'Coming Soon' notice on the Wayback machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20021024142 ... u-toppage/ (all the way up to 2002).

What a short time frame for a contest. I wonder if anyone actually won the car. Or the jacket.

And here on the site Sega keeps insisting that the game has 22 courses.

Has anyone investigated the game files to see if there really are more hidden paths?

Technically there are 22 courses if you count the reverse tracks:

Code: Select all

1. Sprint Zone
2. Solid Circuit
3. Sky Peak Track
4. Sky Peak Hill
5. Great Rock Road
6. Deep Rock Road
7. Snowy Mountain
8. Night Ground
9. Night Section A
10. Night Section B

11. Sprint Zone Reverse
12. Solid Circuit Reverse
13. Sky Peak Track Reverse
14. Sky Peak Hill Reverse
15. Great Rock Road Reverse
16. Deep Rock Road Reverse
17. Snowy Mountain Reverse
18. Night Ground Reverse
19. Night Section A Reverse
20. Night Section B Reverse

21. Industrial 400
22. Heat Stage 1000
With regard to the original topic, here is an old 2006 thread from NeoGAF from someone claiming they won a Sega GT jacket: https://www.neogaf.com/threads/sega-gt- ... ket.80642/
